Help ! Someone stole my Fonts !!!

The Hardware:

PC-based machine. P-II 450 Mhz. 256 Mg RAM
Windows 98 S.E. 30 Gig HD.

The Software:
Corel WordPerfect Suites Release 8
Internet Explorer 5.0
AIM
Yahoo IM
MSN

Here’s what’s happened. A few months ago I realized that I had lost 95% of my workable fonts with WordPerfect. This is frustrating in the extreme. I have a long string of "WP ( WordPerfect) Iconic fonts, International Fonts, etc ) But only perhaps a dozen English language based fonts that we would recognize.

Yesterday I got tired of it, and saved all of my WP files to a desktop folder. Then I did a complete UnInstall, using the CD. I then restarted the machine, and insalled it again.

Nothing. I still lack most of my fonts. I figured okay, this is 2003, I probably can download the most recent release of fonts for WordPerfect 8.0 off of the Internet. I Google’d for a while and didn’t come up with anything workable.

How can it be that I have SOME piece of software that is seriously limiting my ability to use these fonts?? It’s not the printer, I had all of my fonts for quite a while after buying it last year. This is driving me bonkers.

Any thoughts on how I can figure out what piece of software has deleted my fonts? Is such a thing even possible? And if so, why would ONE package of software make OTHER packages of software conform to the same limited set of font choices?

I’ve never had this problem until I reformatted my Hard Drives last autumn but then, I did so with every single Install CD at my fingertips, and basically re-built the HD with all of the old software intact.

Thoughts? Solutions? Help !

Can you search your system for the fonts to see where on your hard drive they might be? Perhaps they’re installed but WP just can’t find them.

OS X, for example, has about four different “Fonts” folders, and you need to put all your fonts into a specific one of those in order for your apps to use them.

I have a Mac and I use MS Word, so I’m just making WAGs here.

Dunno about WP, but most applications reqiuire that you install your fonts before they applications will show them for use

Go to C:\windows\fonts and you get the “install” option under file.
You can then browse to your desktop (hint, its under c:\windows too) and click select all and then install.

If you find out, let us know – I use WP for my work and Windows products basically are designed to destroy WP every chance they get. I’ve had to do a complete reinstall a couple of times, and have to reboot several times daily because my WP freezes and quits, and it’s just making me crazy.

And my nephew’s goal in life is to WORK for Microsoft! Ack! Going over to the Evil Empire! Gack!

Have him kidnapped by a “deprogrammer”. The brainwashing can be hard to break, but no need to see the poor boy suffer.

Unless WP uses a completely different fonts folder, your fonts * were* in your windows/fonts folder which you lost when you reformatted. Windows just reinstalled its basic font package.

You need to find the original font files, probably on your WP install disk. If not, you may find them in your WP folder, if you’re lucky. They generally have an extention of .ttf. For example Arial woul be arial.ttf. Find those files, dump em in the fonts folder and you should be in business.

Also, there are tons of free fonts on the web, but fonts for commercial software packages you generally have to pay for. To install fonts from the web, download them into a temp folder, unzip the file with Winzip or the equivelant and dump the *.ttf into your font folder.

Nope, under Win98 he needs to install TTFs to the font folder using the method described above.

Youse guys is da best. Right after I put out a fire here in my other career, I will sit down at The Oracle Of All Things Windowular and figure this out. Keep those suggestions flowing, I am determined to get back all of my fonts.

I need Standout TODAY, and do not have it !!

Hey, try download.com search for a font manager

They have plenty …

Here is one:
http://download.com.com/3000-2316-6535708.html?tag=lst-0-1

I looked around and did a Find File on *.ttf. All I found in the Fonts folder is the extremely basic selection, and a TON of Windows Fonts for other languages.

I will go searching for some free fonts but I very much fear that this will be a painfully laborious process. I wonder why, when I re-built the HD, I did not get the full panoply of Win 98 SE fonts…it wasn’t everything my Mac has, but it was a nice selection.

Hmmm. What if I tell the computer to go looking in the Win 98SE CD for more fonts, and to import all? I’ll try that.

Thanks, I’ll keep youse posted.

You might want to check download.com for a rescue program as well. Perhaps you can retrieve the deleted files if your OS reinstall didn’t write over that sector yet.

I use a program called Drive Rescue.

Oh my gosh. I’ve become a FontWhore.

I found a site with 15,000 fonts in its archives???

THIS IS SO COOL. Thank you all for the helpful suggestions, but I feel I’ve found a more than workable solution !!! Now, I do have to find a foolproof way of backing all of these .ttf files up in case I crash. I’ll pull them to floppies, just in case.

    Oh, this is really neat.
