Help Suggest Realistic/Mature Love Songs for my Playlist

You might like the contemporaneous hit by a young Shakira, with an identical melody and feel through most of the verse:

(That was in reference to I’ll Stand By You by The Pretenders.)

A bit surprised there haven’t been any Moody Blues songs mentioned. I’ll fix that:

It’s Up To You
Never Comes the Day

I know that song! On our college playlist the summer we got together, I included Ciega, sordomuda and which I believe is from the album that came after Pies descalzos.

For people who only know Shakira by her English work, her Spanish songwriting is phenomenal.

That summer we were in the same intensive Spanish language program and he was in Spain studying abroad.

There’s a set of lines in Tú that sounded to us like “please love your spiders” in English, so we tell each other “please love your spiders” from time to time.

“Ghost of a Chance” (from the “Roll the Bones” album) and “Cold Fire” (from “Counterparts”), both by Rush.

When Neil Peart wrote songs about relationships, there was no fluff and woo. Just a mature outlook aimed much more at folks past the hormonal stage.

And if you can’t bear his voice:

Ha! I was learning Spanish at the same time (mid 90s). The other album that helped me (also has excellent songs) was Cuando los Angeles Lloran, by Maná.

That’s funny. I’m a huge Rush fan but I was just yesterday thinking how weird it would be if Rush wrote a love song. I couldn’t think of a single one. I will definitely check this out.

There’s also “The Speed of Love,” also from “Counterparts.”

Apologies if any of these have been posted before.

Here is a 90 year old timeless classic. It has been in a number of movies. This is the original by Fred Astaire.

“The Way You Look Tonight” - Fred Astaire

This link has a list of some of the many cover versions. The version by Frank Sinatra & the Nelson Riddle orchestra is the most popular and wisely imitated version.

Me And Magdalena. Perhaps the most beautiful song The Monkees ever recorded.

Longer.

Congrats! The duet “It’s the Going Home Together” from the old John Latouche musical The Golden Apple seems very apropos.

(Homer’s epic, but early 20th-c. America, plus musical comedy. Best known song is Helen’s ballad “It’s a Lazy Afternoon”.

Great choice!
