Help test my psycho-social theory--describe yourself

  1. Shrink & commercial artist. I like to make stuff. Funny, witchy, pretty and pretty strange.

  2. Who sends snailmail? Anyway:
    Mr. Soandso
Ms. Soandso, or her last name if she uses it. Actually, person I know better goes on top
    Address
even if they’re married forever, etc.

Crap. Apparently if you hit return it posts.
3. I make my own address labels.

  1. 39, female, gay (married-equivalent).

1.) Tell me a little about yourself.
Happy, adventurous, judgemental, very self-assured, occasionally snobbish.

2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?
How they prefer/were introduced to me.
If their preferences are unknown or they are a married couple that are not close friends of mine, the form of address I would default to is the form I use for myself, if surnames are different, or Mrs X A & Mr Y A, if surnames are the same.
The order of female first or male first will depend on the subject matter. If the letter is primarily to one person, their name will be first. If the letter is equally to both, I will usually put whichever one flows better first.

3.) How do you put your return address on mail?
Ms E Ssured & Mr D H (if I’m writing the letter, my name goes first)

4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status?
25, female, married.

Female, 41, married to Drachillix, Mom to 18 yo F and 14 yo M, step mom to twin M 5 yos. OB/GYN RN by day, ballroom and salsa lessons by night, impatient and well-loved.

Jack and Jill Jones
1234 Main Street
Whoville, CA ZIPCODE
or Jack Jones and Jill Smith, as some of my friends kept their birth names.

Cyn Drachillix
1236 Main Street
Whoville, CA ZIPCODE

  1. AP English teacher, early twenties. female, rather androgynous, lawful neutral. It seems somewhat relevant to this poll to mention that both my husband and I go by our last names socially–that is to say, no one (including myself) calls him by his first name, ever, and as many people call me by my last name (which I prefer) as call me by my first, a quirk of my profession and my own preference (We both have unusual last names) So we are both unusually attached to our last names.

  2. Rarely do: if I am mailing something to someone in particular, I’ll just put their name on it–I wouldn’t put both names on just for the sake of inclusiveness. Otherwise, I would probably put their names in the order they are socially known as when people are talking about them–this seems to be a combination of who I knew first and whatever meter is more aesthetically pleasing, not a gender specific thing. If I didn’t know them at all I would probably default to the traditional Mr .and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. If I am in a hurry, I’m likely to just slap somebody’s last name at the top, unadorned, so that the mailman will know he’s got the right address. That’s what do when I mail family members.

On preprinted labels it is my last name/his last name with no first names or initials at all. Then our address. If (god forbid) I have to hand write a return label I usually just write my last name at the top–no initials–or I just write the address, no name at all. If I am in a real hurry and have no preprinted labels I have been known to just write the street number and name nad the zip code–the minimalist approach.

27, married, female.

**1.) Tell me a little about yourself. **
Single middle-aged white male, software manager. Honest and honorable. Overweight, easy-going. Loves to read. If you are a friend, you are a Friend, but don’t cross me.
**2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?
**
I rarely address mail at all, but the rare times I do, it would be to the first names of the couple. “Jim and Susan” or “Jack and Jill”

3.) How do you put your return address on mail?
Either my last name and my address or just my address.

**4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status?
** 42, single, male.

1.) Tell me a little about yourself.

Retired, classic conservative (liberal socially, conservative fiscally, tend toward non-invlovement in international politics) agnostic, educated, involved in community work.

2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?

John and Mary Smith normally, but may add Mr and Mrs if I don’t really know them.

3.) How do you put your return address on mail?

First initial, Last name
Address
4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status?

61, M, married for 40 yrs

1.) Tell me a little about yourself. I’m a chemist, a socialist, an elitist, and an INTJ. I could join MENSA, but I won’t. I ride a motorcycle, but never for fun. I’m beginning to go deaf, I’m quite nearsighted, and I’m prone to losing my temper.

2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple? I try to anticipate how they’d prefer it. To my parents’ generation, old-fashioned rules: Mr. and Mrs. John Smith; to my generation, Mr. and Mrs. John Smith or John and Joan Smith depending on the situation. To younger couples, John and Joan Smith, almost exclusively.

3.) How do you put your return address on mail? I don’t, usually. Most of my mail is bills, goes out in pre-addressed envelopes, and has almost zero chance of not making it. Hand-addressed mail has the return address hand-written, often with my name left off, or else I’ll use one of those labels the beggars send me. Printed envelopes get printed with the return address on.

4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status? 40, male, married

  1. I’m a broadcaster and musician; record archivist, sound engineer. Expatriate Canadian. Tea drinker. Owned by three cats, and the bank.

  2. We are in the odd situation of only knowing one married couple (excepting relatives), and we haven’t had to send any mail to them. If we did, it would be addressed to Mr. & Mrs. J. Jones, street address, city, state, zip.

  3. I can’t remember the last time I put my address on a letter, or sent one. It’s got to be more than 4 years. It would be the same as above, except Initial, Lastname, Address.

  4. 45, male, married.

1.) Tell me a little about yourself.
I work as a computer programmer, I spend too much time on the net, and at other times I do odd jobs arouond the house (not often enough for my wife, probably), read fiction, and play drums.

2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple? If it’s a formal invitation then “mr and mrs”, if it’smore informal, the “john and mary smith”.

3.) How do you put your return address on mail? We seem to get free labels from Easter Seals or the American Heart Association or whatever. Often those just have my name, but we bought a bunch of labels that have both my name and spouse’s name on them.

4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status? 35, male, married

1.) Tell me a little about yourself. ** I’m usually cranky.
**
2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?

John Smith and Jane Jones, or John and Jane Jones, if they have the same last name.

But if I am sending something to a good friend, I sometimes like to gussy it up with as many names and titles as possible. I can’t wait until a friend of mine gets her PhD, so then I can send her something addressed to The Rev. Dr. Firstname Middlename “Nickname” Herlast-Hislast Jr. (She’s not really a Jr., but what the heck.)
**
3.) How do you put your return address on mail?**
Lastname and address, or if it’s from both of us, MyLastname/HisLastname and address.

**4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status?**33, Female, Married

** Tell me a little about yourself. **

Professional musician and artist manager. Sideline as music photographer. Very liberal, very free-spirited. Caffeine junkie.

** How do you typically address mail to a married couple?**

Older married couple - Mr. & Mrs. Richard Roe, if same last name, Mr. Richard Roe & Mrs. Jane Doe if not. (ordered again by how well we know them)

** How do you put your return address on mail?**

Personal mail:

Street Address
City, State
ZIP

Business Mail:

Same, but company name first.

** What are your age, gender, and marital status? **

32, Male, married. We use different last names, FWIW.

I’m a 31 year old female animal lover. I enjoy shopping (for anything). I’m kind and have a good sense of humour. I’m from CANADA! Eh.

2.) How do you typically address mail to a married couple?

Ms. X. XXXX and Mr. Y. YYY

4.) What are your age, gender, and marital status?

31, female, single

1.) I am 24, under-educated, half of an almost-married lesbian couple. I live in a big Canadian city. I love to read and write. I’m very talkative.

2.) If I’m addressing someone older than I am or someone who is only an acquaintance, I put Mr./ Ms. Firstname Lastname. If they have a title such as Dr. I use that in place of Mr./Ms. If it’s a peer, I address it to Firstname Lastname. If I’m feeling whimsical I’ll use a nickname if the person its intended for will know what I mean (as in a close friend). Examples: Professor Ashley, Artemis Katmo, H.R.H Queen Anne.

3.) I put my first initial, my last name, then my address.

4.) I already told you in #1, but I’m 24, female and engaged.

Argle-bargle foofaraw! I went away from my post and came back, and I didn’t really answer #2 because I had let my attention wander.

Mr. Man Lastname and Ms. Chickadee Lastname.

Would like to amend the “describe yourself” section. Add “impatient.”

Now . . . WHAT"S THE THEORY? HOW MANY SAMPLES DO YOU NEED?

!!!

I just moved to Oregon from New Mexico. Having shaved my head on the 22nd of June, I have only just begun to realize that if I want my head to stay warm when the snow starts to fly I’d better start growing hair now . Right now I have a “Curly Howard” haircut. Hopefully by the end of summer I’ll have enough hair that all my old hats will fit properly (I still have a few that didn’t get lost in the move). It still amazes me how cold my head can get in the shade at even moderate temperatures.

On a typical day I will use a ball-point pen on the outside of the envelope. If I’m feeling especially cryptic, I will use disappearing ink (if I can find it – it keeps disappearing).

It depends. Sometimes I like to emboss it with a dull metallic object, such as a knitting needle. If I’m in a hurry, I will just dig through my stuff and find one of those “Free Gift” pads of pre-addressed return address stickers (you’d think that these guys would catch on that I’m not going to send money for something I didn’t ask for – go fig.) If I don’t have stickers or knitting needles handy, I usually carry a ball-point pen for just such an emergency. To see my handwriting, you might guess I have excellent shorthand – except it’s in long hand.

I want to know what the theory is!!!

2.) Usually “Mr and Mrs Theirlastname”

Gravity

(yes, I use either Gravity or K. LaRoe - and that return address will get it back to me, if needed. Heck, it will get mail to me if you mailed me something.)

As said, 31 later this month, female and married (11 years).
