Help This American Get The Most From The 2024-2025 England Football Season

OK, so I’ve adopted Ipswich Town (root for the underdogs, and all that, like we Americans do) for the EPL. How can I watch EPL games legally in the US? Is there an app I can subscribe to? Failing that, how can I watch them quasi legally (viz, with a VPN – not asking how to illegally pirate content)?

I’ve also adopted Wrexham AFC from [checks notes] League One. How can I watch /their/ games legally in the US?

Finally, how can I watch FA Cup games in the US?

Speaking of FA Cup, is there also a Europe-wide club tournament going on concurrently, a la UEFA Champions Cup?

Are there any American players expected to tear up the EPL this season? Will there be any friendlies with American teams this season?

Is there anything else I should know? Teams to cheer for because of other reasons? Teams to hate for valid reasons (for example, owned by Russian oligarchs or their coach is a pederast or something)?

Some are available on Peacock.

I was hoping there would be an all-inclusive package in the US.

There are quite a few EPL teams playing in the USA but most are against other European teams (exception is Aston Villa are Playing a Mexican team in Chicago)

You will have to be quick most of the remaining games are this Saturday and the last one os next Wednesday

There are thre Europe wide club competitions The Champions League has the highest ranked teams, followed by the Europa league and the Conference league. All take place concurrently with the EPL season.

As a Town fan of over 30 years (it’s my home town), may I say welcome to the rollercoaster. This season is going to be tough, but we completely defied expectations last season, so you never know… but 17th will be a major achievement. But then again… we’ve got super Kieran McKenna.

Our opening match (at home to Liverpool, Saturday 17th August) is on Sky in the UK; I don’t know if that helps if you wanted to ‘visit’ (ahem) for the weekend. You can get day passes for Sky coverage through ‘Now TV’, I believe. Early start though, 12.30pm kick off in the UK.

Just as a taster, here is the game I went the craziest when watching us last season. The winning goal in this thrilling match is unbelievable.

With Peacock I generally have access to most of the Prem schedule. Second division games and cup matches are a lot harder to come by. For free, anyway.

Southampton fan here says “hey” to a fellow promotee.

In that case, sorry to bring up bad memories… well, not that sorry

I think that FA and League Cup matches are all on Espn+ in the USA (subscription required, I got mine bundled with Disney+ and Hulu). As far as I can tell, Peacock has all the EPL matches, but some are only available 24 or 48 hours delayed… those being the ones that were broadcast live on… USA?

So for a (no offense) smaller hype level team, I’d guess that the vast majority of your matches would be available live on Peacock.

This is correct. All EPL matches are available on Peacock, but perhaps not live. Matches that are aired on USA or NBC live will show on Peacock delayed.

ESPN+ has both domestic cups.

The EFL just signed a deal with CBS for the Championship and Leagues one and two so some of those matches should stream on Paramount+.

CBS also the League/Carabao Cup this year beyond the EFL Leagues. FA Cup remains on ESPN+ though. Unlike NBC/Peacock which airs all the EPL games in one format or another, only a certain number of EFL games will air on CBS/Paramount+.

Here’s CBS/Paramount+'s schedule for the opening weekend of EFL (next weekend), not surprisingly Wrexham is a featured game, we love Rob and Ryan:

Jolly good idea.
I’m a long-time Spurs (= ‘Tottenham Hotspur’) fan :sunglasses:, but the excellent documentary ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ (available on FX in the US and Disney+ over here) has made me a Wrexham fan too. :grinning:

I believe Welcome to Wrexham is also on Hulu - handy if you have the Disney+/ESPN/Hulu bundle.

I’m going to guess that the number of Americans who have gotten into football strictly becaue of WtW is not insignificant. And I’m going to guess that the number of Americans who already liked football but are now adopting Wrexham AFC because of WtW (myslef included) is not insignificant either. Rob & Ryan knew what they were doing. If they were able to negotiate the rights to some app that showed only Wrexham games – League or FA Cup or what have you – they’d make millions (millions more than they already have, that is).

The channel you linked to made the video unabailable in the US (fucking snobs  ) so I found a different host. Thrilling goal indeed!

I noticed that, regardless of which channel is showing a highlight reel, they don’t have the little chryon that shows the time and the score. WTF??? Do the broadcasters (over there) not have such a chyron either? Are the viewers at home expected to keep track themselves? Or is the chyron just gone for the highlight reels?

Here in the U.S., the chyron is basically non-negotiable. Witness its presence in the bottom left corner here – that chryon that’s on the highlight reel was also there during the game proper.

It’s always theŕe during live games and will be there sometimes, but by no means all the time, for highlights.

Manchester City - not owned by a Russian oligarch but by a Sheikh from Abu Dhabi royalty whose investment has catapulted them since 2008 from a bottom to mid-table side who hadn’t won a trophy in over thirty years (and who lost the last game of the previous ownership 8-1) to the best team in England over the last decade and European champions. This comes through the financial investment of over a billion pounds but we now have pretty solid evidence through cooking their own books which has led them being charged 115 times by the Premier League.

Unlike clubs like Everton and Nottingham Forest who were also charged for financial impropriety and who were swiftly punished with points deductions it has been over a year since the Premier League announced the charges against Manchester City and no punishment has been dealt out yet.

I’m a Liverpool supporter. I used to like Manchester City years ago when they were a ‘normal’ club. Kind of hate them now for always winning the league.

I can’t be bothered with researching the ownership of every club now to determine which ownership is dodgy and which is not.

Ipswich is a good team to decide to follow I think.

We’ve even got an American connection: our majority shareholder is the Arizona state firefighters’ pension fund. I’m not kidding.
