My brother worked this year as a full time pizza delivery man. He told my mother he has no intention of reporting his tips to the IRS. I need some doper help to convince him this is a very bad move.
He never listens to me but maybe he’ll listen to the people here.
Why not let him listen to the IRS and the bloody Vogs they’ll send after him when they realize he didn’t report his tips. It’s too bad they didn’t make him declare his tips at the end of every shift, like they do in the restaurant business.
Well, I dated a guy who one day went to his bank and found that the IRS had withdrawn ALL his money from both his checking and savings accounts, and from his savings account in a different state that his grandparents had opened for him, because he had failed to file taxes for a couple years and the IRS took everything he owed plus interest and then they took a portion from his wages for a while after that.
I also knew a guy who couldn’t work “over the table” because his boss got busted for not reporting all income and the IRS found out how much he really made, and since he didn’t want them to do to him what happened to the guy above, he had to work under the table and couldn’t even open a bank account.
I also know a guy who hadn’t filed taxes in a while, but his girlfriend talked some sense into him and he is now on a reasonable payment plan, rather than simply having the IRS take all of his money. He got lucky because he basically 'fessed up before they caught him.
So maybe these stories of woe with the IRS will help?
There are IRS horror stories galore out there. Sometimes it starts small and then just gets out of hand. If they decide to audit him, they are definitely going to be looking for tips. Not having any on that kind of job would be a red flag.
But if your brother is a legal adullt, you are going to have to let him learn things the hard way. It’s his business.
