Help using MIDI Keyboard in Finale.

Hello, this is an odd question, since I’m nowhere near the problem, but my wife is having trouble setting up our new MIDI keyboard and getting Finale to recognize it, and she hates asking for help. I’d probably be able to figure it out if I were there, but I’ll need instructions that my wife can follow through. I guided her through the driver installation for the MIDI link to the computer (we’re using a Yamaha USB to MIDI controller), but she says that Finale doesn’t realize the keyboard is there.

The keyboard is a Casio WK3000. So, does anyone know how to get Finale to recognize and use the keyboard for input? I can’t help because I’m in Kuwait, and she’s in Germany, so it kind of sucks.

To check that the interface is working OK, try downloading some MIDI file from the internet, and playing it through Media Player (I’m assuming Windows).

Now, this is using Finale 2003, so may not be exactly right for other versions. Go to ‘MIDI’-‘MIDI setup’ and check that the input and output are set to the USB adaptor. IIRC I had to set this manually. And also check the MIDI cables are the right way round - sometimes ‘out’ needs to go to ‘in’ on the keyboard, and sometimes ‘out’ to ‘out’, depending how Yamaha have decided to label them.

Other than that, you can get more help at the Finale mailing list: http://lists.shsu.edu/mailman/listinfo/finale

You mention ‘new’ keyboard? Does that mean that the interface worked with the ‘old’ one? If so, it’s probably not the interface. Are you trying to use the keyboard to input midi data to finale (in which case keyb-midi-out -> pc-midi-in) or use it as a sound source to play midi data from finale (pc-midi-out -> keyb-midi-in)? You’ll also be aware that any midi connection carries 16 channels of midi data, and that if (for instance) your keyboard is set to output on channel 2 and the pc is only listening on channel 1, you’re on a hiding to nothing. The channel settings on the two pieces of kit (send/receive) must match. (sometimes the ‘listener’ can be set to <all>).
