Help! Windows Explorer is Missing!

Was going to organize a friend’s computer files and looked for Explorer to add folders, transfer files, etc., and I’m unable to locate it. The icon is gone; Explorer isn’t listed under Programs.

Am sure it’s in hiding somewhere - how can I retrieve it and place its icon on the desktop?

Unless your friend installed Windows somewhere non-standard, the program will be right here… C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

Just right click on that, and you can send a shortcut to the desktop, or whereever you want it.

Oh, and if your keyboard has a Windows key, you can just hit Win-E to launch Explorer, too. Even faster than the Start Menu.

It would be helpful to know which MS operating system you are working with.

I’m not familiar with XP or ME, so, with that disclaimer…

In 95, 98, NT, and 2K, the executable is called explorer.exe. In 95 and 98, it should be found in the windows directory, in NT and Win2k, it is in the WINNT directory.

From the Start button, click on Find/Search, and then Files (and Folders), then type explorer.exe in the search field. Make sure the drives to be searched includes the system drive (more than likely C:). Start the search. You should get at least one “hit”, and it should be in the directory described above. Right click the file, and select “Send To” and then “Desktop”.

That should create a desktop shortcut to the Windows Explorer program.

Good Luck.
