Help with a Stormy-like song?

There’s a song I’ve heard on the radio twice now. Much of the tune itself sounds to me for all the world like the classic “Stormy” but the artist is different, as are the lyrics.

You were the sunshine, baby, whenever you smiled
But I call you Stormy today
All of a sudden that ole rain’s fallin’ down
And my world is cloudy and gray
You’ve gone away
Oh Stormy, oh Stormy
Bring back that sunny day

I mentioned to my wife who, incidentally, was digging on the tune, that it was a remake of Stormy, or at least had borrowed heavily from it. That opinion was greeted with her patented “You’re so full of it” look.

Can someone help? Is there a new or at least somewhat newer song out on radio playlists now that borrows from that old classic?

I haven’t heard the new version, but you might get some clues by listening to other songs written by Buddy Buie. I heard him interviewed at length last summer on a talk show and he was pretty clear about his tricks and how so many of the hits he helped write used the same chord structure.

Those lyrics you posted square up with my memory of Stormy but it has been a while.

Santana did a cover of “Stormy.” It’s on the Best of Santana 2 album.

Interesting, Zeldar, thanks. I wasn’t familiar with Buddy Buie before but your link got me searching and the read on the Classics IV was pretty good stuff. While it didn’t mention any remakes other than, as pinkfreud mentions, Santana and The Supremes, I see that Spooky was theirs too. No surprise there as Spooky came to mind when I was trying to remember Stormy’s lyrics.

The Santana remake isn’t what I’m looking for though. The song I heard on the radio was done in much the same style as Stormy, single male vocalist, low key, kinda that 60’s swingin’ style. Given that it was a Top 5 in ‘68 though I’m thinkin’ this artist must be someone different, younger.

The lyrics you posted look like the lyrics for the original Classics IV Stormy- what are the different ones?

Also, Bobbie Gentry did a cover of the song- can’t recall if the lyrics were changed.

Glad the Buie link was of interest, lieu. I know there’s little in common but the one word name, but Brandy (you’re a fine girl) always had the same feel for me and came out around the same time. Others less easily confused:

Hang on Sloopy
Suzie Q

Sample clip of the Bobbie Gentry version can be found here

Nice! Bobbie’s guitar is good.

Unfortunately, I don’t know what the new lyrics are but I guarantee I’ll try and get them next time. But the tune is just so similar.

I’d never heard this before and, now, twice in two days. This must be something relatively new.

Wee, I’ll take a listen but I well remember Bobby “Little Green Apples” Gentry. When I was a kid I bought her album w/ Glen Campbell.

This is definately a male artist.

surely there is a site that lists cover versions of songs?

Got it.

I called my wife to see which Sirius station she’d had it on. Jazz. Now she’s the absolute worst at knowing who does a song but she did in fact remember some of the lyrics. A quick Google and we’ve got it.

2006, John Legend’s Save Room off the Once Again album.
Whew… Wiki confirms the sampling.

Many, many thanks!
