help with .avi & .mpg files

ok

I have the .avi file, and I run them through TMPGEnc Plus to convert them (only takes about 25 minutes on my pc for a 300,000kb file). This converts it to an .mpg file (now about twice the size).

Next, I am putting it through nero, and burning it to my cd-rw onto a cd-r.

I have confirmed that my DVD Player plays VCD’s. According to the link, it should be no problem. I even managed to look online and found a copy of the owners manual, it too says it should be no problem.

However, once it is burnt, I put it into the dvd player, and all I get is “PBC PLAY” on the status screen, then on my tv it has a still image of the very first part of the vcd I burnt, and it will not play (even though the dvd player continues to say that it is playing). Because of the link above, and the owners manual saying that it should be no problem to play a vcd, I am thinking that I am doing something wrong when I either convert it, or burn it.

Anyone have any suggestions?
I know about DVDRHELP, and I registered there, but they make you wait 24 hours before you can open a new thread, or post a reply. I know this place is a great place to find a bunch of smart people (my old screenname was just MegaDave), so I was hoping someone here could help me.

You’re missing one step. You have to author the Video CD. I don’t use VCD so I’m not 100% sure on the format for the files, but I’m guessing it’s going to be somthing akin to the DVD format.

So grab yourself a VCD authoring package and use it to create the menus and add the movie files. It should spit out the proper files which you can then burn on to the CD.

ok, that worked. I now have a title menu, and if I push “1”, it starts playing the clip. Now, however, there are two more problems. First, about the first 5-8 minutes of the clip are all pixilated, with the pixels being off colors (like pink, red, or white). This stops after a few minutes. However, the audio is now out of sync with the video (too far ahead). I know this is something that I can correct with the TMPGEnc Plus, but I have no idea exactly how to do it.

Any help with that?

Hmm, well first, make sure the original .avi file is not corrupt.

Next make sure you strip the sound into a .wav file before encoding into MPG1 (Video Cd quality) and point ot the wav file for sound rather than to the .avi file (TmpgEnc sometimes encounters problems using the source .avi sound). That might help the sound sync problem (unless it already existed in the .avi file).

You say you “use Nero”, but how do you use Nero? Are you burning a data CD, a VCD, or a SVCD?

In fact, is your movie file a VCD or SVCD? And will it fit? A little over 800Mb movie will fit on a (S)VCD depending on the encoding format and a lot of piddly little annoyances.

You don’t have to register at dvdrhelp to read the info. Lots of good stuff there.

First, check the format of the movie. Second, use a program like VCDEasy to create the CD image file. (I have problems with Nero, even version 6. Forget any Roxio programs for video.)
