Last August I purchased a DVR 5000 DVD/VCR combo player made by Go Vision for my boyfriend’s birthday. Since we didn’t have any DVDs at the time (besides the two he got with the player Rushmore and Sorcerer, we’ve been slow to notice a serious problem with this player.
After joining Netflix and getting the first two seasons of Buffy on DVD, I’ve discovered that our DVD player seems to have difficulties accessing menus.
For example, on disk 1 of the first season of Buffy, I am unable to click the Special Features link that would let me see Joss Whedon’s commentary for Welcome to the Hellmouth. On disk 5 of the second season of Buffy, the menu won’t come up at all. The first episode Passion will play if I just click the remote at the blank page (no lettering, but the default site background is there). It’s frustrating because Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered is on that disk and I can’t get to it!
Has anyone else ever heard of this? I went to the Go Vision site and called their 1-800 tech support line but they told me to leave a message. I also used their online help to describe the problem but so far haven’t heard anything.
Yeah, happens with some players, so I have more than one player type in case that happens to me. It
more likely the disk format not the player.
As I said, I got two players so I just switch to one that plays it. You can get an APex 1200 dvd
player for $59 with free shipping now if they have that offer still. Its circuitcity.com
That’s an interesting theory, but would a 5 disk set have different formats on each CD? Disk 1 works great, Disk 5 won’t play, but they are in the same DVD set.
I don’t want another DVD player, if possible. I bought the DVD/VCR combo because my TV stand doesn’t have a lot of room and I like the space saving of a combo deal.
Are the disks that play clean? I mod a forum with 75,000 members dealing with any kind
of cd or dvd based machine & dirty disks is the main one people overlook. The laser can see the dirt
even if you can’t. I prefer to wash under the faucet & pat dry but you could try a cleaning solution.
Also a cleaning disk for you dvd player. I prefer the wet ones not the ones with brushes. Wait fifteen minutes
after using it to use your player.
If the set doesn’t play I would take it back to the store & get another set.
I’m gonna have to second the idea that the DVDs themselves are the problem. Unfortunately, the only way to be sure is to try the same disc in two different players or two copies of a disc in the same player.
Message boards like DVD Talk and Home Theater Forum regularly have threads which discuss known problems with certain titles. Sometimes they are player-dependent, sometimes they are problems with the disc on all players, sometimes it’s just you got a bad disc.
