Help with Cat Food choice....

The main difference between stuff like Purina and stuff like Iams is the amount and quality of filler. Our girls need filler. We’ve had them both on SD foods (usually R?D, since they’re prone to weight problems), and they constantly screamed their heads off for more food. They can have a larger amount of Meow Mix for the same calories and nutrition as a serving of Iams, but it fills them up more. For us, the quiet is worh the extra poop.

Oh, for goodness sake. They were on R/D.

Neither of my females have ever clued into the basic practise of “poop covering”. One misses the box entirely on most occasions, and the other claws the walls to ‘bury’ whatever she left behind. They’re both around 10 years old, so I doubt things will improve.

My male, however, is immaculate.

Keep a close eye on your kitty weight. Nutro is wonderful, but fattening if overfed. Wish I had a picture of Scatter AKA “Jabba” to share.

missbunny…

Now that I think about it, she may actually be… She’s definitely the more demanding of the pair. When she decides she wants to be petted, no one can stop her. She will not go away until we take time out to play with her. She doesn’t usually start the mini-wars we have in the living room, but she doesn’t shy away when attacked either. Other animals in the house do not bother her. She will go and check out our friend’s dog if they come to visit and walk off as if it’s nothing…

My boy on the other hand is a mess. We actually adopted him by himself at first because we thought we only wanted one cat. The shelter called us later that week and wanted to see if we would like to have his sister also. (I would have 30 cats if I could, so I couldn’t pass her up. We thought she was adorable when we were there, but another couple had her playing with her.) He was a little standoffish with her at first, but they get along great now. As far as other animals…One look at a dog and he’s an instant bottle brush. I had to shut him in the upstairs bedroom to stop him from going nuts while the dog was there.

Gulo gulo…
Our boy goes overboard covering up. I wish we could average the two and have normal cats (if there is such a thing).
As for the Nutro, we have an automatic pet feeder that dispenses only what we set it for. We got it to feed them while we were out of town but it’s been great to keep it running all the time. That prevents us from going overboard on the feeding.

I’m wondering if we might need to add a little wet food to their diet. They can’t seem to get enough water sometimes. I’ve heard that wet food can be bad for their teeth though.

I don’t think wet food is bad for their teeth as long as you don’t feed ONLY wet. They need to have dry too. Also, feeding wet food is a great way to get more water into them - I never give wet straight out of the can; I always mix it with water into a thick oatmeal-like consistency. They all love it and at it gets more water into them - very, very important, esp. for boycats.

Also, it does sound as if your girl is the boss! I have found in lots of boy/girl kitty pairs that the girl is the boss. It’s funny, my bossy girl Reigns Supreme over the other cats but she is a submissive little bunny with me. I guess she knows she’s the boss of them but I’m the boss of her.

NUTRO by a looooooong stretch makes the best pet food.
iams and science diet don’t have shit on this brand. read the ingredients- anything with corn it is is doing nothing good for your animal. (corn gleuten, on the other hand is completely nutritious and digestible, but is rarely found in any food but nutro.)

honest to god, I have done extensive research on this and this is the healthiest brand of food for your dog or cat.

because there isn’t a bunch of useless undigestable crap in this food, in cuts down on waste from your animal and actually improves the stench of your cats poo.

nutro can be found at any reputable pet store.
never buy cat food at a supermarket. there is nothing there worth the money for what it will do to your cat.

it is also a good idea to keep your cat on the same food. once your animal adjusts its digestive system to a certain brand of food, it can cause stomach problems if you change it (at least regularly.) so if you have to change foods, do it gradually over two weeks at least.

as for litter: feline pine is really really nice. any litter you find in a pet store will be better than anything you find in a supermarket.

I need to get one of those automatic feeders. Although I’m sure one of the cats would hotwire it to their benefit.

A little wet food is fine. Every so often I take one of those little cans of cat food and split it three ways for my monsters. They love it.

You’re not supposed to let it sit out for longer then a few hours (bacteria growth) but most cats will eat it right away.

Another vote for Nutro here. They are one of the only foods without “by-products” (read miscellaneous body parts) listed in their ingredients.
