Help with Java and video problem

I just got my new mobo and cpu installed and my machine is running like the wind. Awesome!

On the old configuration machine - a 1.2ghz Celeron with about 900MB of Ram and a 64 MB 4x AGP ATI Radeon 7500 - if I was playing video and also doing other stuff (namely playing Pool via Yahoo Messenger) the video would lag and be out of synch with the audio. I dealt with it as long as I could until I decided to upgrade

So I upgraded to a P4 3.0 gHz with HT (and a new mobo) with 1GB of RAM. As I am not a gamer, I did not upgrade the vid card - figured I didn’t need to, the processor would take care of my needs.

So now I have this strange delimma which is impeding on my pool playing and pissing me off. here’s the deal:

When I am playing video - DVD video from the DVD drive or just an AVI file off the hard drive - in either PowerDVD or WMP10 - and I am playing pool over Yahoo, everything will run fine (as in the video and audio are in synch) but at some random point the whole machine will freeze. No response to the mouse, no Taskmanager, nothing. The audio from the video will play in a loop from the second where it froze. I don’t get BSOD and there’s nothing indicated in Event Viewer about this problem.

I have to hard reboot to get out of this.

I’ve gotten all the latest video drivers. I have the latest Sun JVM. Have also tried it with the MS JVM. I have the latest Yahoo Messenger. I updated my copy of PowerDVD5 (OEM) and WMP is the latest as well.

I’ve checked the mobo and processor heat, and there is no spike or change when this freeze happens. It’s constantly a little on the hot side at like 111-114 degrees F - but it runs without freezing day in and day out with other applications.

So what’s the deal? Any ideas? Seems that the problem lies between video rendering and the use of Java. I haven’t had the patience to try this with any other Java app that’s not Yahoo Messenger. I am going to assume it’s ANY Java.

Could be that I need a new vid card with more video RAM and AGP 8x. Unfortunately I am tied to ATI due to my awesome ATI Remote Wonder that I use all the time with this machine. And a 128MB AGP8x ATI card is not in my budget. Not for playing pool, at least.

Any help?

Dangit - forgot to mention I have XP SP2 with all the updates known to man and the very latest DirectX. My virus scanner is AVG Free. No spyware or anything is on the machine.

Crapola.

No resource conflicts among the various pieces of hardware, right?

A fine question. Unfortunately my computer knowledge ends at the physical existence of hardware and not quite that deep.

I did manage to make a file of my resources list. Can anyone tell me if there are any conflicts that might shed some light on my problem, and how to resolve the conflicts?

Here is a link to a very small (33kb) PDF of my device resources list.

Thanks for your help

Have you tested your memory?
