Help with problem playing .wmv files in Mac OS X

The thread title pretty much sums it up. I get various errors when trying to play .wmv files from the web, including something about “the hardware license is inconsistent”, but usually the audio will play but not the video. I have Windows Media player 9 for OS X, and I’ve also tried it on VLC and DJO player, with essentially the same results. I’m guessing that it’s some sort of codec conflict or deficiency. Is there anything I can do to the files to make them work, or another player that’ll work?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

In my limited knowledge of things - different software uses the same codec(s) so if you have problems in one app you will likely have problems in the others.
There is an app available on the internet which will analyse the file and tell you what codec is needed. It says it’s for Avi files but will identify the codec needed for non avi files also…

I’m on a mac and my only experience with .wmv files is with streaming video. On my system these streams always play in Microsoft’s Windows Media Player with an abysmal framerate (e.g. one frame each 5 seconds) even over a very fast connection, so I avoid them.

Do you have the DivX codec? I know that lots of .avi files are encoded using that format. I’m not sure whether it applies to .wmv.

Hopefully, if you download open-source VLC media player for OSX, it’ll be the end of your problems. I have this on 10.3.2 and it works a treat for pretty much every video format out there.

no luck here, i tried it in VLC, Mplayer x, and windows media player. you come across this type of files once in a while. wish i could help, the only thing i can think of is that it is a wmp 10 file and has some sort of new codec that has not been released on the mac yet.
and for jjimm they have released OSX version 10.3.7, so you might want to update
