There is a quote about intelligence and how every man is happy with his share. Anybody know the quote and who said it?

“Mankind have a great aversion to intellectual labor; but even supposing knowledge to be easily attainable, more people would be content to be ignorant than would take even a little trouble to acquire it”
Samuel Johnson
There is an old Yiddish proverb that - very loosely translated - says that if all the people in the world were to throw their troubles into a pot and then pull out an equal share, they would all want their original troubles back.
Mathematically suspect, but psychologically sound.
I think the quote I was referring to might have been Hobbes. Or Shaw.
