Help with Roku?

So we moved over to ATT TV from U verse and the process changed out our router and apparently the name of our router. One tv has a physical Roku 3 box and the dog had chewed up the remote long ago so I’ve been using the app remote on my iPhone to control it. Now though with the new router the app doesn’t connect, apparently because the Roku is on a named network that does not exist. Can’t change the Roku network without a remote, and can’t use the remote without changing the network …

Other than ordering a new remote, or buying a new puck, any solutions?

Perhaps a “Factory Reset” on the box? There should be a button or a pinhole on the Roku itself to do that.

Note: I don’t know for a fact that this will work.

Factory reset will cause it to try to pair with the nonexistent remote, so that won’t help. Do you have a universal remote, or can you borrow one? Most recent universal remotes can control a Roku box (not a stick, but you referred to your Roku as a “box” so I assume you don’t have a stick model).

Don’t have one. Have a different Roku remote that must be for a different model as it works on the two Roku smart tvs but not the box. I can order a new remote for ten bucks on line or likely just swing to Best Buy and get a new basic Roku or Chromecast for 25 to 30 so not the end of the world. Just frustrating.

Yes, Roku TVs use a different remote code than the boxes do, although all standalone boxes use the same code. Sounds like getting a new remote may be your best solution.

Although, one clarification, you said “the Roku is on a named network that does not exist”. Actually the Roku is not connected to any network since it’s trying to connect to your old router. Could you try changing the router’s SSID to the old name and see if the Roku connects to it? I’m not positive if this will work and it may cause more trouble with the rest of your network than it’s worth.

Afraid of the more trouble. Thanks though.

Some routers support multiple SSIDs, it may be worth a quick check if yours does (and if you’re not already using all the available SSIDs). Of course, you’ll also have to remember the SSIDs password.

Gets to more trouble than a new remote is worth!

You could look for a Smartphone app to run your Roku. I had to use one for an old Roku that was a had-me-down from my daughter.

I had this problem before. Setup a router with the old name and password that the Roku knows. The Roku will connect to the router with the old name. Connect your phone to the same router and then you can use your phone to access the Roku and connect it to the new network.

From the OP:

“I’ve been using the app remote on my iPhone to control it.”

What trouble are you afraid of by changing the network ID? I just swapped out an old router with a new, better one, and changed the SSID and password to match the old one. I never had to update any of the devices that connect to it. Made it super easy, and it’s not complicated to do.

Sorry for the delayed response. I had already tried to reset so it was past the point. And I don’t even know how to set the SSID of the router. It was done by the installer. Who had apparently put a cap in the name that wasn’t there before. By then I had reconnected all the other devices…

FWIW I am not a big fan of ATT TV. Using it for the regular local and cable shows is hard to navigate, especially from the app. And we did not know that local PBS is not on it. Only one PBS show my wife likes, Antique Road Show, but she does like it.

Stuck now for the contract period but we’ll decide about becoming PBS members or not for the one show to be able to stream it and likely cut the cord completely when contract is up. All she likes live is CNN and MSNBC. There should be ways to easily stream them to smart TVs …
