help with this computer oddity?

I just got a little dos-box pop-up labeled “hst_reco.exe” and displaying about half a line of ANSI gibberish. When I tried to close the box it said windows can not close the program without losing any unsaved data or something like that, and should it end the program anyway? I said yes and it closed without a problem.

But that was weird. Anyone know what hst_reco.exe is? It caused my computer’s internal speaker to beep, oddly enough…

Running WinXP.

The place at the top where it gave the file name also gave a directory in which it was located. I don’t remember it exactly but it was I think in a system folder called “extras”.

HST Modem?

I’m guessing the “reco” part of the filename means “recognize” or “reconfigure”

  1. I couldn’t find a reference to hst_reco on Microsoft’s site.
  2. I couldn’t find a reference to hst_reco on Norton’s site.
  3. I couldn’t find hst_reco on a another computer running XP.

…Basically, I can’t say this with 100% certainly, but it appears to be neither a virus nor a standard XP program.

To be blunt, I don’t know what hst_reco is. Everything that follows is a WAG, or a wild *** guess. Anyhow, I might go with host recovery. This would be especially true if your computer is at work and you pay someone to support a software program or your network. It’s possible that technical support has some sort of diaster recovery program that backs up files, restores deleted files, and stuff like that. The host part suggests techncial support can dial in and do this from a remote location. If your computer is at work, and you pay someone to support your network, you might want to call them to see if they are familiar with the program. Once again, that’s a guess based soley on the program’s name.

The beep might be the program’s way of reporting errors. This is pretty old school, though.

Anyhow, open Explorer and press CTRL + F to find the file. Hopefully it has an icon or something that helps to identify it. I’m not a big fan, however, of running a program when you don’t know what it does, especially when you are on network.

I have done a few extensive searches and haven’t been able to find any information about the program, which seems to suggest that it’s not a virus or any sort of malicious program.
The only thing I could think its some sort of driver/program/configuration program for an old piece of hardware maybe that is incompatible with Windows XP? I’ve always found out the best way to fix these problems is trying to think about the time when the problem first occured and what was happening around that time?
As a workaround you could search for the file and delete but also search through the Registry editor
Start >> run >> regedit
then ctrl + F to find and search for things like hst_* etc…

Hope that helps
