Help with Windows Media Player

The other day i downloaded what seemed to be the most recent version of Windows Media Player - the Series 9 Beta for Windows ME. I started to get a few problems with it - for example, a 20-minute .avi video would sometimes actually indicate a running time of over an hour in the bottom corner of the Media Player, meaning that if i tried to click on the progress bar to fast-forward the video, it would go beyond the real length of the movie and just stop playing.

Anyway, i decided to get rid of the new Player and go back to the old one. I couldn’t find Windows Media Player in the Add/Remove Programs area, so i just downloaded Media Player 7.1 and installed it, hoping that it would over-write the Series 9 version.

However, since rebooting my computer the Media Player doesn’t work at all. When i try to launch it i get told that there is an “Internal Application Error” and then i get a dialog box asking if a want to send an error message to Microsoft. Sometimes i will also, at an apparently random later time, get a message that there has been an error in wmp.dll, and that the Media Player will now close. I wanted to get rid of the Player altogether and start from scratch, but there is no Media Player option in the Add/Remove Programs area, and when i try to just delete the file Media Player in the Windows folder, i am told that the application is currently in use and cannot be deleted.

Help! please!

Did you download the player through Windows Update? If so, you can uninstall it at the same place. Just click on Show Installed Updates at the top of the page and then scroll down to Windows Media Player. There should be an option to uninstall at the right side of the screen.

No, i installed it from the Windows Media Player screen. I tried to run System restore, but it didn’t work.
