Help with Windows Startup...System Configuration

I have AOL Instant Messenger…in ‘Startup’ under the System Configuration Utility, it lists AIM and I can uncheck the box beside it so that the computer wont start AIM (and connect to my ISP) when I boot up or restart the computer.
But very often, after booting up or restarting, I find the computer starting up AIM (and my ISP connection) even though I have un-checked the box. When I go back to System Confuguration, I find there are now TWO listings for AIM in ‘Startup’ (same location - C:\Program Files\AIM95\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl), and one is unchecked, the other is CHECKED!!
It seems to happen when I start AIM (after unchecking the one AIM listing) and then close it out…all of a sudden Sys. Config. is listing 2 AIMs and one of them is checked.

Why is this happening? Why is it listing TWO AIMs, and marking one for startup? This is making it so that when I restart before I go to bed, the 'puter starts up AIM, and I wind up being connected to my ISP all night. How can I stop this?
And I am not a computer whiz who knows a lot of Windows technical stuff…so please explain in terms I can understand. Thanx…

My guess is that AIM is adding the additional startup item itself. It probably checks and if it isn’t set to start, it adds the option.

If you don’t want AIM to come on don’t uncheck the box in System Config, check the box in AIM instead where you can state you don’t want it launch it at start.

If you dont want programs connecting to the Internet by them selves, uncheck ‘connect to the internet as needed’ in dialup networking I think it is.
