Helpful Household Hints

anybody have any - especially for cleaning?

I just put a slice of lemon in a bowl of water and microwaved it for 2 minutes. I then let the bowl sit in the microwave for 2 more minutes. After removing the bowl, I just wiped the surfaces inside the microwave quickly with a paper towel. Voila! The formerly food and spill encrusted walls of the micro are now sparkling clean!!

Great for cleaning small stuff, things with lots of detail, or a nasty pan (fill pan with water, drop in a couple of tablets, come back in half an hour.)

My tip concerns laundry. Don’t use the scoops that are provided with laundry detergent, whether it is liquid or powder. Save a coffee scoop which is about two tablespoons. That is all you need for clean clothes, in most cases. I had been using a full scoop and I was wondering why my clothes were disintegrating and developing pilling. Also, if you use the Downey softener ball, put white vinegar in it and put in the washing machine. The softener makes my clothes feel oily and frequently I get spots of concentrated softener on my clothes and have to wash them again. The vinegar cuts through soap scum and seems to make the towes more absorbent. I got these tips (and more) from this website: www.thathomesite.com. I hope this helps

My profound theory of household cleanliness is: if you don’t make a mess, you don’t have to clean it. It really boils down to simply avoiding making a mess to begin with.

This contrasts with Mrs. Tonk who, for example, will finish cooking dinner by laying the used spatulas and spoons on the counter instead of the sink, requiring one of us to scrub the dried goo off of the counter later.
