I made a donation to the Red Cross but a lot of people had to leave animals behind because they wouldn’t allow them in the dome or in some hotels. Noahs wish has been trying to place animals in this situation and is also on the ground to help the ones that are stranded or lost or hurt.
I urge people who think that humans are more important than animals to assist human beings instead of irreleveant, insignificant animals. By all means if you feel that animals are more important than human beings or even on the same level, donate to these organizations.
And what is wrong with donating to both, pray tell?
There are going to be many, many donations to the Red Cross. The problem right now isn’t necessarily funds-- it’s in getting the help where it’s needed through very tough conditions. The humans will get the assistance they need as soon as it’s possible to get it to them. The animals, however, may get lost in the shuffle.
Most of the shelters will not accept pets. People are forced to leave them behind. these rescue organizations for animals do a wonderful service in my opinion, if for no other reason than being reunited with a beloved pet may help restore a terrified child’s sense of normalcy.
Call me a bleeding heart, but I hate to see any creature suffer unnecessarily. It’s not as if these animal rescue organizations are kicking humans out of the way to get to the animals, or taking food and water from them.
It’s a waste of resources on insigificant things while those resources could be used to help human being in genuine life saving need. If you can’t distinguish between which is more important, go ahead and donate. If you think that animals are more important than humans, go ahead and donate. If you think that human beings are more important than animals, do the moral thing and donate to causes dedicated to helping human beings.
Indeed, as I mentioned in another thread, some animal rescue organizations are providing food, water, and supplies to needy humans as part of their mission.
As I said, lack of funds is not the problem right now. The problem is getting supplies to the people who need them. The humans will be taken care of, rest assured. There will be millions pouring into the Red Cross, just like after September 11, and likely, just like the September 11th fund, the money will sit there for a while while they decide what to do with it.
It’s not a matter of thinking animals are “more important”-- nor do I even think they’re AS important as humans. However, I see no reason to ignore their plight simply because humans are suffering, too. What good does that do?
It detracts nothing from what is being done for people.
BS. And any decent human being that cares more for fellow human beings than animals knows that. What we have on the Dope is a group of people that don’t care more for human beings than animals. You are contributing to wasted resources. Resources better spent on saving and giving other types of aid to human beings.
BS again. Human beings are required to save animals. If they are there to save animals, they could certainly save human beings. But animals have the priority with these people instead of people.
From today’s New York Times article, “Tense Crowds Fill Buses From Superdome to Texas”:
“Pets were not allowed on the bus, and when a police officer confiscated a little boy’s dog, the child cried until he vomited. ‘‘Snowball, Snowball,’’ he cried.”
Whether you love animals or despise them (or somewhere in the middle,) surely you can understand that plenty of the hurricane victims must be hurt by having to abandon their pets. Aid organizations that keep those pets safe are doing an immeasurable service for many of the human victims.
No, that’s not what they’re doing at all. If you’ll refer back to pinkfreud’s post, she said that** they were giving supplies and assistance to humans they met, too.**
They are not taking resources away from humans. The animals do not have “priority.” You are deliberately ignoring the facts.
Unregistered Bull, you’re not only hijacking the thread, you’re also making unsupported personal accusations. IOW, you’re being obnoxious. This isn’t the Pit, and you aren’t discussing; you’re frothing at the mouth. Knock it off. Find someplace else to ride your obsession. It’s becoming a drag here.
This thread would fit better in MPSIMS, Contradancer, so I’ll move it over there for you.
I’ve donated money to several organizations. One of the was Noah’s Wish. I’m also off to buy baby formula for a shelter tomorrow. I’m not going to fault anyone who chooses to give to pet rescue organizations. If I didn’t live in my current apartment, I’d be a pet owner too. I can’t imagine anyone being upset with someone donating money, time, or items.
