Okay. In addition to Popeye and Bluto (later named Brutus, why?) there were Olive Oyl, Wimpy, Poopdeck Pappy, The Jeep, The Sea Hag, Alice The Goon (what was that thing, a harbinger of Saturday Night Live’s “Pat”???), and didn’t Popeye also have three nephews a la Donald Duck, or am I imagining that? If he did, then I cannot remember their names. Hence the request for help-sk!
Ack, ack , ack…
The strip Thimble Theater was originally about the Oyl family, and was around like 10 years before Popeye showed up!
Castor Oyl, Olive’s “get rich quick” brother was the star
Mom and Dad Oyl (who’s names escape me)
Olive’s boyfriend…Um…Ham Gravy was Castor’s partner.
Castor and Ham were going treasure hunting and needed a ship. They run into Popeye and Castor(?) asks Popeye (in his full sailor outfit) “Are you a sailor?”
Popeye responds with “What d’ yas think I am? A cowboy?” and within weeks was the star of the strip.
Bobby London gave Olive a sister named Sutra Oyl (late '80s/early '90s).
Thanks Fen, for all the additional info! I think every local TV station had its own version of “The Popeye Club” and I never missed it once I got home from school, but somehow I missed those characters.
A personal “aside”: In my neighborhood when I was 12 years old, there lived a girl our whole young neighborhood called “The Sea Hag” because she was reclusive and therefore, ugly to our young minds. She was quite a bit older than us and so she was always a mystery to me, and I was therefore never really “comfortable” in joining in with this. But because I was just over from Germany myself and needed to be “accepted”, I became a part of the group.
My brother told me that she recently passed away, but before she did she modelled for an Atlanta Agency and had married a very successful lawyer.
Kids can be real pieces of shit. Too much Info, right?
