Hemicorporectomy Cut in Half to Live

I don’t want to make this about the unpleasant stuff, but do you get phantom pain?

Thanks for the replies.
About phatom pain… I do at times feel like i am setting on my tail bone(which I don’t have LoL) but not really pain just odd. I do feel my legs that are not there but again not pain just that like if i lay on edge of bed i can feel my legs hanging off the bed. to be honest i kind of like that. At times it can center me when upset. Odd? not sure just seems to help. My pain that I have is in what body i have left. in ribs, back, chest.

Thanks about clothes. yes the shirts I wore for the two news stories are two I have found I like. two of only about 3. What I am looking for is like a dress for my height 2ft 11. where you can tell where breast line is and waist. well what i call my waist which is right under breast. then the bottom hang like a dress. I love reds, black, silver, gold, and sparkly things. V necks. I got a breast reduction when I was cut off so might as well have a nice v neckline. smiles. when in the bucket and out I would like to have clothes that draw attention instead of my lack of legs. hard to explain, wish i could draw. I have started doing odd eye make up that seems to help draw attention away from the no legs. I do like butterflies, even done tiger look. Is some pics on my facebook. angel.lincoln@gmail.com

about legs, yes I am working on getting a team together. hanger, (the guy who made the dolphin tail and RPI so far have stepped up to say they will join me in this adventure.

One big problem which from studing the few who have had this operation, many have this same problem. there is a spot on my back that still has not healed from the operation. I go to wound care, have tried a wound vac so far it is still there. I know it will heal in time.

I hope by this time next year, I have new legs and can go visit my other two kids I have not seen in 6 years. I also hope to be in a house with a small garden. I know in God’s time it will all happen. Just God’s time is not always the fast right now time we wish for.

Going to take a nap. Talk to you all soon.

I got a van now where I can stay in my chair. This has helped a lot.
No one really could tell me what caused me to stop walking. Finally I decided the why would not change anything so now I try to focus on how to keep going.

Thank you for sharing your story.

Was any of your spine removed above the sacrum?

my spine was cut between L3 and L4. so that is where the back of my body ends. the front is just about an inch bellow belly button.
I joke that I am like Slimmer from Ghost buster’s just with a prettier face. LOL

Angel, I just watched your video. You are a lovely, lovely woman, and I’m not just saying that because of what happened to you. You’re brave and sweet.

BTW, interestingly enough, I am your neighbor. I live in Albany. I was surprised to see Albany Medical Center and Mechanicville in that video. I may see you out and about. Shall I say hello?

Is that from the surgery? From scarring? From the pressure of the bucket after hours of being in it?

Obviously there was no intention to leave you in pain, but I’m curious if there is a known reason why you would have that pain? Or is it that this is so uncommon a procedure that that was an unpredictable outcome?

Wow, Angel. You’re an amazing person… best of health and life to you and your family.

Heh. Much, much prettier.

I echo these sentiments. I’d be happy to help, either in sewing something, donating fabric, whatever. Let us know.

Welcome to the Dope, Angel. You’re going to like this place.

Thanks for sharing your incredible story, Angel.

I’m thinking of your description of your ideal shirt/dress… Over the past several years the empire waist blouse has made a big comeback. Might not something like this or this suit you, perhaps with some altering as necessary? Here’s a long sleeve version. You can also search for babydoll dresses (the style, not the toy!) which tend to be empire-waisted as well.

Anyway just wanted to throw those ideas out there. Thanks again for introducing yourself, and I hope you’ll enjoy your time here at the Dope!

Thanks for sharing, Angel, and for being here. I once had a coworker who was born with a body similar to what you now have, and it was amazing to see her doing all the things everyone else did . . . only differently.

Of course, there’s a HUGE difference between being born that way and it being a sort of “normal” for the person born that way, and suddenly becoming that way after 40+ years of having legs and hips.

The Long sleeve shirt is very very pretty. and sexy. yes that is like what i was thinking in how made except to be longer since would be all I was wearing.

WOW the whole site at vENUS HAS tons of great shirts the type I was thinking of. Wonder if they would do a hemi Line. LOL. this site gives great ideas and puts a picture to the look I am talking about thanks for showing me.
Angel.

Some people are born with no hips and legs. the difference in hemicorporectomy and that is that we have no buttucks, sexual parts, or bladder. I read of a person like you are talking about that even had two kids , she was very brave and wonderful.

I wonder if this is a reference to Rosemary (Rose) Siggins. She has been featured in at least one documentary. She had sacral agenesis and actually did have a full body when she was born, but her legs were deformed and useless, and her parents decided to have her lower body removed when she was very young so she would have better mobility. She is truly amazing. You can easily Google her for more info, and she has a Facebook page under her own name.

Thank you for sharing,** Angel**.

As for clothing, you might look at local colleges and see if any have fashion design programs - designing a dress for you would make a really great assignment for an upper-level course. Many instructors enjoy the opportunity to tie a course into the community and real peoples lives like that. Barring that, you might be able to hire a student or recent grad to make some pieces for you for affordable rates, and the department office would be a good place to find a list.

Actually, you mention that some engineers at RPI are going to be working on your new legs right? Looks like RPI has an annual fashion show, sponsored by the Black Students Alliance. http://bsa.union.rpi.edu/ This site is out of date, but I see elsewhere on the web it’s an ongoing yearly thing. Maybe some of those students might be interested in a cross-disciplinary project…
