I’ll cite the Many Worlds Theory again. For every poster who’s been banned for a reason, there must exist (according to the Theory) some world where the same poster was banned for no reason. For this to be possible, the rule must exist to allow this, and the jackboots must be supplied, whether or not they have ever been used that way in this world.
I’m reasonably sure there are a lot of Dopers who’d like to read and participate in threads about Jimi Hendrix and his music, without being sucked down the Murder Conspiracy rabbit hole.
If that isn’t one of our inalienable rights, it should be.
On the other hand, a “Great American Conspiracy Theories” postage stamp set sounds like a great idea. I’m going to write my Congressman, assuming someone in his office knows how to read.
Jetblast, it is true that aceplace57 included in his OP a remark about Jimi Hendrix’s drug use and used that as part of his justification for his personal opinion about whether Jimi deserves a stamp. It is true other posters discussed the nature of Jimi’s death according to the official story, as you like to put it. Your divergence into a far from official and extremely controversial nature to his death, i.e. that Jimi was murdered and covered up by some nefarious government conspiracy, that is what takes ordinary discussion into somewhat related tangents to the OP and turns a thread into a giant hijack.
Your ideas are far-fetched. They have no place in a mainstream discussion on Jimi Hendrix. That is the point and why your remarks were singled out for moderation. Marley stepped in to stop an inflammatory and irrelevant tangent from turning into a Pit Fight in the middle of that thread that was, in bulk and intent, a discussion about the issuance of a stamp and whether or not Jimi deserves that honor. Any discussion of the “official story” (i.e. mainstream accepted version) of his death will not particularly derail the thread, but bringing up a wildly unconventional possibility - even one that could have truth in it - would most definitely turn the thread into a giant debate over that idea, and not whether or not Jimi deserves a stamp.
Throwing conspiracy theory ideas into mainstream discussions is a frequent source of hijacks, and is rather close to trolling territory. The moderators on this site are [del]paid[/del] expected to oversee precisely those kinds of issues, and intervene exactly as Marley did.
So, in other words, what Marley23 and samclem posted is true. You chose your name in reference to ideas that Flight 800 was shot down by a missile.
Well, yes, all of our handles signify something about the nature of our posts, to a degree - some more than others. When a user picks a username based upon a topic discussion, that is moreso than someone who picks a username based upon some esoteric funky sounding phrase or personal pet name or reference to what they overheard their neighbor say.
People are allowed to personally evaluate other posters based upon other ideas and statements by that poster. That is why we have to register with a set username and are not allowed to post anonymously or use sock puppets. It is accountability for your words. While you are correct that it is a logical fallacy to assume your ideas about Hendrix must be false because you believe conspiracy theories about other topics (like Flight 800), that does not mean people are force-ably constrained to refrain from logical fallacies. In fact, it is a common way people in the real world sort credible from noncredible sources.
Not really. I mean, this board operates under a culture of trying to be fair to members, and the moderators are unpaid volunteers who are members first and foremost, so they are influenced by that culture. But ultimately, this board is the whim of the current newspaper company owners and Ed Zotti. Neither of them have any real stake in being fair to you.
There really isn’t much of a process for registering complaints about moderation beyond posting them here in ATMB. I suppose any intelligent and halfway internet competent person could come up with a couple more ideas that would raise the level of attention to someone higher on the food chain, but that is not likely to be favorable to you. Anyone above the collective moderators of the board would either be a corporate weenie more interested in keeping all fuss away from themselves and the owners, or else Ed Zotti (who probably feels the same way).
Your basic and only feasible step is to complain here in this forum (which you did with this thread) and see if you garner any support from other members (which you have not). Any further harping on the topic is not going to raise your reputation with other members or convince anyone that your cause has merits. It will merely desensitize them to your claims of unfair moderation and unjust treatment, to the point that you will be like the Boy Who Cried Wolf. “There’s that boy again, crying wolf. Somebody slap that kid.”
I don’t recall the full outcome of that thread (I know I read some but probably gave up on it - I don’t recall), so I don’t know what you’ve been previously instructed on the matter. Normally, it should be safe to say that you are free to start a new thread if you can come up with either new material to support your cause or a new approach to constrain the thread or some other way make a clean start rather than restart whatever hijacks or silliness or whatever got in the way of the last one.
But the place to do that is a new thread dedicated to *that *topic, not the middle of a thread discussing Jimi Hendrix from a mainstream position.
Wait, are you saying you are the victim of government murder?
No, he’s saying that Jimi was murdered because he knew the secrets of Area 51.
Here’s the deal, Jetblast: since 2010 all of your posts have been about the Jimi Hendrix conspiracy and my closing of your thread about that conspiracy. The last time you posted about anything else (your TWA 800 theory) was 2009. The term the mods use for this is “being a one trick pony,” and it’s frowned on. As the Registration Agreement says, the board isn’t intended to be a venue where you can bang on and on about the same thing forever. That’s especially true when you’re interrupting a discussion of something else and we have very little patience when a poster makes complaining about the moderation of the board one of his primary activities. If you’re still aggrieved by the closing of a thread from four years ago, you are in desperate need of a new hobby. Get over it. If you want to continue to post here, you need to find something else to talk about. If all you’re interested in is the death of Jimi Hendrix and the way your 2010 thread was handled, the mods will not tolerate you for much longer.
That’s where they keep the stamps?
I think there’s only one way **Jetblast **could be so sure Jimi was murdered. I say Jetblast did it, and either the guilt is eating at him, or he wants recognition hoping Jody Foster will turn straight for him.
Janis Joplin killed a homeless man. The lack of attention paid to this critical issue clearly shows the degree of bias and government control this so-called place of “Straight Dope” suffers.
Not even Jimi cares if he was heinously murdered any more. Find a new pony, jetblast. Nobody, but nobody cares what you think about this one.
Jetblast, a little information *they *would prefer we didn’t know:
If you end any post with “A4V”, the moment that the software accepts that post it cannot be considered a rules violation by the mods anymore.
That only applies if your idea has fringe on it.
Johnny Cash shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.
Johnny Cash himself told this story on stage: A fan once approached him and asked: If you shot a man in Reno, whatcha doing in jail at Folsom?
The very day after the OP’s protest is filed, Peaches Geldof is found dead.
Coincidence? I think not. :dubious:
Hell, I can go you one better. The very day of this post, I discovered there had been someone in existence named Peaches Geldof!
You’d be better off writing to the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee.
