herbal weight loss question

My wife and I are fat and out of shape. (her wording not mine, she is, however, absolutely correct!) We have started a aerobic/weight workout program, better balanced meals, etc. BUT… she wants to use some “herbal weight control system”. I object to taking anything if I can get away with not taking it. She says, “It’s all natural!” I say, “So is crude oil and bird poop but I ain’t taking that either!” The so called “system” has a daytime formula and a night time formula.

The daytime contains… Ma Huang Standardized Extract, Gurana Standardized Extract, Green Tea Extract, Epimedium, Laminaria, Siberian Ginseng, Astralagus, Corn Silk, Licorice Root and Chromium.

The night time contains… Rhubarb Root, Casacara, Sagrada Bark, Hydroxycitrate, Magnesium, Valerian Root, Ginger Root, Fennel Seed, Zizyphus, Crataegus, Ho Shou Wu Extract, Gymnema Extract, Senna, Perrermint Leaf, Digestive Enzymes (Amylase, Protease, Lactase, Lipase, Cellulase,Phosphotase and Ribonuclease), Licorice Root and Chromium.

Can any Doper out there tell me if this stuff is good stuff/poisonous crap or direct me to someone/a website that can do the same thing? I’ve already made up my mind but I’ve been known to change it in the face of viable proof.

Some of those ingredients (I think) are powerful stimulants (depending on the doseage). I don’t know how wise that would be for someone’s heart who is out of shape. Definitely consult with a doctor first.

Cascara Sagrada is a laxative, I believe, and ma huang is the same thing as the recently banned ephedra. Guarana and green tea both contain caffeine.

The fact of the matter is, if you don’t have everything else in order, the supplements really aren’t going to make that much of a difference. If you do have everything else in order, they can help a little, but they’re still not magic.

My thoughts exactly! Getting up off of our… ummm backsides is the biggest plus. I’ve never experienced “magic” in any undertaking but I have experienced a lot of satisfaction in accomplishing through working smart and hard. I am not taking this stuff.
Thanks for the input!

There’s at least 3 laxatives in there plus something that helps you sleep (at least, that’s what I’ve seen Valerian advertised for). That could get messy!
