Herbert Lom has passed away at age 95

My favorite comedy scene ever was him delivering Clouseau’s eulogy.

Wow, I was watching old episodes of “The Human Jungle” on YouTube just the other day

(Godammit - did I kill another obscure celebrity again?)

Damn! I liked his stuff. He wasn’t just the police official in the Clouseau movies, he was Tigranis Levantis in Spartacus and The Phantom of the Opera in 1961* and the doctor in The Dead Zone, and Abraham Van Helsing (opposite Christopher Lee’'s Count) in Jess Franco’s underappreciated version of Dracula and Captain Nemo in Harryhausen’s Mysterious Island, among a great many other roles. He’ll be missed.

  • When his Inspector Dreyfus finally passes in the Pink Panther movies, he’s playing the organ, a clear reference to his Phantom role.

"Every day and in every way, I am getting better, and better. "

I bet Sellers meets him at the gate, tries to pat him on the back, and somehow manages to push him down a manhole.

He and a young Peter Sellers were also together in the awesome The Ladykillers by Ealing Studios. Lom was completely believable as a villainous, brutal gangster in an otherwise comedic movie.
