Here I sit, hungover, wondering where the term “hangover” originated. I’ve been assuming that it basically just refers to the drinks hanging over into the next morning, which it probably does, but who coined that term? I’m OED-less & my google-fu is bringing up some pretty lame attempts.

Can anyone clue me in to what “survival” is referring to there. Oh, and Kimstu, thanks! Why I didn’t go over to ol’ emtyonline is a mystery…or, actually, considering what I asked, no longer a mystery.

Survival is probably a definition of what a hangover is, a survival of the effects from the previous night. Check out survive from the OED.

I always figured it was from my head hanging over the toilet…
