I created a game called “Lincoln”. Same structure as Omaha, except you can use ANY 5 cards, regardless of where they are.
So you can use all three hole cards to make a hand? Sounds a bit like Super Hold 'Em, which seems to be known for being even more nut-heavy than Omaha. For ‘Lincoln’, even more so.
FWIW, 5 streets of betting is the norm for the 7-stud variants. I wouldn’t mind it for Hold 'Em too, except that you’re giving even greater incentive to chase a hand.
Cool Ranch sounds interesting, but must take forever and a day to deal out. Is it played with a qualifier or a declare?
Cool Ranch never felt that long, though it likely takes much longer to play than normal 7 card stud. You’re a lot more engaged in the deal, you’re making decisions and thinking more about what the other guys are doing, so the length of the deal doesn’t feel like a problem. Now, if you have guys hemming and hawing about every card that comes their way, the game will grind to a halt.
We declared, but did not have a qualifier. We never had qualifiers on any of our hi-lo games, just wasn’t part of our group’s normal rules.
[oQUOTE=friedo;15481814]The boys are coming over next week for some poker. The Big Bet is one dollah! We like to play a variety of different games, so I have invented Brooklyn Hold’em.
- Each player gets two cards, one down and one up. (Bet.)
- Each player gets a third card, face down. (Bet.)
- Two-card flop. (Bet.)
- Two more community cards. (Bet each time.)
So it’s like Texas Hold’em except you know one card in each person’s hand, and since each person gets three cards there is one less community card.
What do you think?

BTW, if you play this game, I get 10% of your winnings.

Your question is not out of place in this thread and it’s recent enough that there’s no problem resurrecting it. The problem is that your question is unreadable, at least to me. I don’t suppose you could repost it using actual words and sentences and capitalization and punctuation and all that?
Welcome to the messageboards, by the way.
I posted this exact game in #7, with the sole difference that you describe the replacement-card rule in more detail than I did.
Where did you play the game? I saw it in Northern California, though assume it was named after the famous card-player, Oswald Jacoby of Brooklyn and Dallas.
We had a combo game in college back in the 80’s - Risk Poker.
Set up a Risk game, each player starts the game normally and deploys their units. Then each player gets an extra 20 units to act as ‘chips’.
First risk player starts normally, but also deals a round of cards and calls the poker game of their choice. Players play around of poker using units as chips for betting. The winner of the hand gets to convert all his winning to his color units, the losers put said units back in their trays. The winner can then deploy as much or as little of said winnings to the board and play their round of Risk.
Repeat for each player.
The winner of the Risk game is the winner of the game.
The strategy was that you had to retain enough units off the board to be able to play hands of Poker, and still keep enough on the board to try and win the Risk game. It was a balancing act until you could get a good poker hand that would allow you to get enough armies that you thought you could run the Risk board and win the game.
We figured the Risk came was the military aspect of the world domination game, and the Poker game simulated politics of world domination.
Fun times…
Similar to a game we called Crow (there are other games with that name).
It’s a 7 card game. You got 4 cards down, then bet. Then each player was dealt another down card and could choose one to turn up. Repeat the down card, turn up and bet 2 more times. We’d also play that as a pot building game where you had to have the high hand and high spade in the hole to take the pot.
born and raised in berkeley.been playing it 4 45 yrs.one of the best games 2 hide good hands…when u declare u take 2 chips under the table, come out with a closed fist, if 0 chip going low.1 going high.2 going both.note,2 win both u must beat both going high
This ain’t twitter - whole words work here.
I can do that diction thing. Didn’t realize I was offending people’s sensibilities.I apologize. From now forward it’s the queen’s english.
It is either “lingo” or linguistics.
I should have written Berkeley myself, instead of the ambiguous “Northern California.” More specifically, I watched it being played (along with Tunk, Klabberjass, and various other games, but mainly Backgammon and Contract Bridge) in a restaurant called the Bear’s Lair.
Did you play it 4 years ago, or 45 years ago, bigkimshew? In the latter case, you might be one of the players I kibitzed!
Because a normal game of Risk just doesn’t take long enough to play?
Well of course the Queen’s English.
You didn’t click the link and/or you didn’t get the joke.
Linguo was a robot Lisa Simpson built to correct people’s grammar. It got overloaded when Fat Tony (Joe Mantegna) and his crew started talking around it.
So a mix of 7 card stud and texas hold’em. I like it.
An interesting variation would be if a player choses what card to turn up. Show weak when strong or strong when weak? Show the Ace or a queen with an Ace in the hole? Might be a fair amount of strategery if high card gets to bet last so it’s about position and what other people are showing. Left of the dealer shows first and it goes around. Someone shows a 7 and I have a pair of 7s. Do I show one to show I couldn’t possibly have a pair of them or keep both under wraps?
Ok ok.I’m not that adept at a keyboard…but here it goes.Big Jacoby; Each player is dealt five cards down.they pick their best three cards[It is a high/low game] and discard the other two into a rubbish pile face down[bob’s your uncle].turn up one of your three cards. Now you are in a three toe pete configuration.*note;generally it is wise to roll a low card so as not to reveal your intentions.i.e.if you roll a king everyone knows you;re going high.It is only fair that all players roll at the same time. Then it is standard 7-stud until the last card.instead of a card dealt down, you are givin the option.exchange a up card, get a up card.throw away a down card, get a down card,Or you may stand pat.Used to play it at the long branch saloon after hours.Circa 1969
the long branch was on san pablo ave. berkeley,ca.Don’t think it’s there now.
