Here is a thread about the 2016 Summer Olympics

Son of a bitch… how strong does your beach volleyball game have to be to even know that’s a rule?

Best name I’ve seen so far is Adam Kszczot.

The long-standing women’s 10k record was utterly obliterated on this track a couple of nights ago, so it’s not a slow track as such I think

There seems to be a tennis player called Jack Sock.

I mean, one of the American platform divers is named Steele Johnson. We are not really in a position to make fun of other nationalities’ names.

Though I did giggle at Chinese trampoliner Dong Dong, because yeah.

I missed that. Still, that’s a 6 mile race, which won’t be affected by the track itself as the sprints and jumps will be. I could be wrong, of course - we’ll see by next week.

What happened?

Walsh-Jennings ran underneath the net to dig out a ball on the other side of the court that was going to land out of bounds.

I’m sorry I missed that. Against the rules, probably; but that’s some serious hustle.

Dude, it’s Sunday at the Olympics, there were loads of events in progress.

On the gymnastic floor at the same time as the men’s floor exercise medal round?

Oh I see - the poster is saying the crowd reaction wasn’t connected to other events in the arena.

Team GB has gone second in the medal table overnight, pushing China down into third. More medal chances today, too, we might even stay there.

If it was against the rules, why would it have been allowed?
:dubious:

I don’t know that it was, I didn’t see that part of the match. Reluctant A’s post suggested to me that it wasn’t.

So, yeah, Usain Bolt won the 100 metre final for the third Olympics in a row. But then I guess “Usain Bolt runs fast” is barely news anymore.

I was pleasantly thrilled to see our guy, Andre de Grasse, win the bronze. He was referred to by the NBC announcer as “Andre de Grasse of France,” while the camera was on him with the word CANADA on his jersey. I should add De Grasse was NCAA champion last year and so isn’t exactly a mysterious stranger in American track.

But what was he like in Junior High?

Sorry that I wasn’t more clear.

Ross was blocked at the net, and the ball was going off her, out of bounds. Walsh-Jennings ran underneath the net, out of bounds on the other side, and bumped it back over to her side, so that Ross could put it back in play, and it was ruled legal. I was marveling at the idea that someone could be so familiar with the rules of beach volleyball that they could have the presence of mind to make a move like that, in the space between when it was going out of bounds off her partner, and before it hit the sand.
EDIT - My Bing-fu is weak, but here’s a description, with pictures: Kerri Walsh Jennings Crazy Save From Out of Bounds, Comes up With Huge Block - Business Insider

Fast.

True story; he went to a regional meet at about that age never having run track before - he preferred basketball - as a spectator, and someone dared him to run the 100 meter. There was a spot for someone from his school, so he did. But he didn’t known how to use starting blocks so he just started from standing up. He broke 11 seconds. He was 12 years old.

You have to love De Grasse. In the biggest event of his life, against the fastest man ever, he comes up huge with a personal best time and the bronze.

Of course I am thrilled with all the Canadian athletes who work so hard and compete with the best.
