Am I the only one here that takes more interest in this Message Board than in the actual questions answered by Cecil every week? I even refuse to go to the “Comments on Straight Dope Columns” forum. Does this make my anti-Cecil?

I find that the discussions that occur in General Questions, MPSIMS, The Pit, and Great Debates are much more interesting and educational than what I occasionally learn once a week from Cecil.

Comments anyone?

Okay, in all seriousness, Cecil and Straight Dope are the sources and benchmarks, the raison d’etre, if you like. (Hey, NTG, how d’ya do those nifty accent thingys?)

But the whole SD phemon is a pretty heady brew for glazed and scarred refugees from the bull, nonsense and dreck that all too often characterizes bb’s. So it’s your choice.

Too much actual (mental) substance at one time can be like a giddy health food convert snorkin’ down 3 bowls of GrapeNuts at once. Repellent but apt analogy; it can cause impaction problems at the lower ends of the digestive process that may require carefully controlled explosives or humiliating removal techniques.

The boards serve as the OTC, rough and ready remedies for rapid ingestion of the (mental) nutrient and fiber-rich fare served forth. Side effects may include cramping, nausea and elevated heart rate.

I read Cecil’s columns every week, and I sometimes mean to go to the “comments” forum, but when I get here, I always get sidetracked. It’s like a virus, I tell ya.

By the way, here’s how to do the nifty accent things:

For Mac: Depress the option key while holding down the e, i, u, n, or ` keys. Then, immediately type the letter you wish the mark to appear over. Thus, to type an ñ, just type option-n, then n. This will only work with selected letters. The other option-key combinations yield the following accents: é, î, ü, ñ, and, uh, à.

For PC: PPPPTHPTHBPTHBTHBPPLBTH!!!

Cecil is only one man (a cool respectable one), on the contrast, there are hundreds of people here voicing their opinions in an almost real time format. Cecil is replying once a week (duh! different rates). It’s like comparing a 747 airliner to hundreds of tiny jets (some mabye not so tiny). hasta la vista…

Echoing Michael and adding, you get more texture with all the personality types that post here too, with sad stories/mad stories/weird ideas/ and LOTS of funny things. It can easily become like you KNOW people that you don’t really know, but it feels like you do. Cecil is great, but the MB, hey, that’s like the La-z-boy recliner chair, you just want to pull the handle and dig in for the night!! :slight_smile:
