I think she discovererd her ‘new ability’ when trying to kill herself… convenient that it decided to manifest itself in such a timely fashion. She didn’t seem to feel pain and she had near instant healing… I think that was the point of the garbage disposal scene, that it;s not ‘instant’, but darn quick… and apparently can regenerate limbs as well.
My current WAG is also that druggie artist guy is not simply working with pre-cognition, but actually has a causal affect with his work… he just doesn’t see that yet… I’ll bet that’s even truer if he turns out to be involved with the Comic Book (9th Wonder?)
As far as Super Hiro is concerned, if he can really stop time or travel to/fro within it, all bets are off… he wins… my wag there is that he has the ability to teleport in time, but the physical cost is much greater than teleporting in space… otherwise he just gets too powerful.
I’d have preffered that creepy evil gov’t guy not have been exposed so quickly… seems very convenient that he is the adoptive parent of cheerleader girl… which could also mean that he is un-awares and then becomes the unlikely ally when his own becomes a target.
WebCam girl, what she sees in the mirror is in her eyes only, and hers is a telekinesis type of power… one shes not aware that she has yet. Please let it not be an ‘inner spirit that she calls forth that looks just like her that isnt her’.
Yes, she seem to feel at most a minor twinge after jamming her hand in the disposal.
I have to admit, what I don’t get is that even if her fingers grow back near-instantly (and where is the mass to replace severed limbs coming from?) why this would also remove the bloodstain that seemed to cover not only her hand but a good section of her uninjured wrist and forearm. Her cheerleader uniform, certainly, should be covered with hard-to-miss bloodstains (and tears and burns). It would be hard to explain away childhood injuries that left bloodstains on her clothes but not signs of cuts on her skin. Does her skin just re-absorb the blood, or what? If she pigs out over the summer and gains twenty pounds, can she just cut her arm off and have all the extra body fat converted into the new muscle and bone mass? Despite a few lip-service references to DNA and “only using ten percent of our brains” and such, I don’t get the impression that even slight respect for science is a high priority for this show. With the government conspiracy angle, it’s X-Miles.
Word. When I posted that I didn’t realize that the show was based on the notion that these powers are all new to the heroes (newly discovered maybe, but not necessarily new).
And didn’t the nurse mention knowing about his brother’s accident before the family was told about it? That certainly didn’t happen in the timeframe of the show, so it appears that at least in his case his clairvoyance had existed for some time.
That’s exactly what I’ve decided to do. I can suspend disbelief for an unusually long time, if I really put some effort into it.
As for Peter’s mentioned clairvoyance, I wonder if that’s supposed to be a manifestation of his powers, or just a clue that he and his brother are more closely connected than most siblings.
Repeat after me: most TV viewers and the comic book audience are not physicists. Claire gets her regeneration mass from the same place as the Incredible Hulk. Also, after her fall, Claire had a bloody cut on her cheek that healed on screen. The blood appeared to be absorbed. Childhood injuries manifested normally, because Claire only recently got her powers. If she pigs out, she never gains twenty pounds, because this is essentially a comic book made into a TV show and when was the last time a comic book female hero wasn’t supermodel hot and had a perfect body?
Regarding limb regeneration, didn’t Mohidar (spelling?) mention that specifically in his speech at the beginning of the episode? Also, it was bloody and hard to tell of course, but it looked like to me that her hand was merely mangled, not necessarily ground down.
Either way, I find this credible enough within the bounds of the show. We all regenerate hair/skin/tissue cells all the time right? Claire just does it a tad faster.
I’m guessing the mirror stuff is just the psychic shadow of some super powerful alter ego “Ms. Furious” persona that emerges when she’s under stress. She’s got the tape so now she’ll know. It was kind a retarded concept that she would pay 25K to put him in private school when she’s barely scraping by.
Cheerleader character (so far) seems kind of pointless re the way she’s written. No implication of why she would want to do herself in. “I’m injury free!? Well that’s pretty shitty!! Time to kill myself!”
Sensitive nurse man doesn’t fly does he, only his brother does? Right?
Nostradamus painter boy is pretty lame.
Super Hiro is the best character so far.
Mr. Glasses thinks it’s better to randomly terrorize the Indian Doctor instead of rolling him up?
The comic book reflects reality stuff foreshadowed next week is (IMO) getting way too cute too fast.
All the powers so far are borderline lame, weenie “cheap to portray” TV powers. Somebody better get a some kick ass powers soon.
Yes, parents sacrificing for their children, what fools.
We don’t know yet.
I’m afraid I must insist upon the use of my coinage, “prognostipainter.”
Teleportation, near-instant healing, flight, precognition and, um, whatever mirror lady does are lame? Is there anyone on this board who wouldn’t take any one of them?
And I disagree that any world-shattering powers are a good idea. I think it would be much more interesting to see how people with limited but still superhuman powers deal with the world and the apparently heavy-duty threat that’s approaching. But then I always was a DP7 fan.
She explained her problem. She’s a freak. She’s not normal. For an angsty teen who wants to fit in and be popular, being different is a death sentence. Power like this, even though she could easily hide it, make her (in her own mind) an outcast. Her motivation, I got. I also got Hiro’s. I can understand the painter. Unfortunately, those who predict the future seem to always get the horrible (or script-relevant) things. They don’t get tomorrows MegaMillions jackpot numbers, or next season’s Superbowl score. Still, the drug addict seeing the future is cliched and boring. Flying, sensitive kid and Type-A older brother are another cliche, as is stripper mom.
They’ve got one more episode to make me care more about the bulk of the characters before I give up on the show.
There are numerous things to get angstified about, but being injury free is such a insanely stupid thing to get upset about. 99.99% of all people would be going “Cool!!” Beyond this if it upsets her so much that she’ll be found out and labeled a “freak”, she seems to be doing her level best to draw attention to herself. Even by the tortured standards of TV logic the rationale for her suicidal misery rings false and stupid.
I don’t know, I think I can buy her reaction. She’s confused, obviously, about what’s happening to her. And on top of that, she seems to think her parents know something about it (hence the “who are my real parents” question and the non-reaction from mumsy). That’s enough to get a teen girl angstin’ in my opinion.
Hiro will seriously be dead of a hernia before the end of the season if he keeps straining.
Hot Evil Mom…go get a scholarship for yer kid. and “The Mob”? Really? “Linderman” doesn’t sound very intimidating either.
It jumped around too much and the powers were pretty “X-Men”…why use powers that have such obvious comic equivilents if you know geeks will be part of your audience. I’ll give it another episode but I think that’s it. It’s no LOST.
And from what I’ve read of interviews, the 10% brain thing is the writer’s idea of an explanation.
