Hey, Auto mechanics. Easy question...

…for a pain in the booty repair.

2000 Suzuki Vitara, 4 cylinder 4-wheel drive.

  1. Interference or non-interference engine?
  2. What’s the best way to address timing gear teeth that were torn off in the process of losing the timing chain?
    NOT my own car…for a change.

This site says it has an interference motor http://bbs.zuwharrie.com/content/topic,5393.0.html

And no, you CAN’T use old motor oil to fertilize your lawn

That site is discussing the 1.6 liter engine which is equipped with a timing belt. Since the car in question has a chain, it must have the 2.0 liter engine so that link doesn’t apply.

Generally like this:
“You %*@* piece of #&^@!”

Nothing to it, but getting a new gear, and trying to find all the teeth that got ripped off.

Yup. 2.0 liter (or litre if you prefer). Sorry 'bout that. I knew better.

H-Heloooo… Today I’m chaynging the engeeeeen in my freeend’s Vitaaaaaara…

It seems to have gone all clunky and squishy…

Just pulled the head off.

It’s definitely an interference engine.

:smack:

Replace engine with used engine if possible. I’m not sure how much a rebuilt engine would be, but it may not be worth fixing at that price. Trying to piece together an engine that tore up that badly would probably nickel and dime you to death.

Even better solution:

The owner owes something ridiculous like $8,500 on the car. She’s just filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy and is 2 months behind on the car payments. We’re thinking, “Voluntary Repo.” What’s she gonna do? Wreck her credit? (for those of you fortunate enough to not know this, the CH7 & Repo makes the car go away for free, and the loan balance evaporates as "unsecured debt that preexisted the bankruptcy) Given she’s got no more debts and a pretty good income she can buy an identical car for cash in a couple months.

Never did understand financing a new car.
