Hey Coldfire, this Grolsch tastes pretty damn good.

Even though it cost me like $6.75 at the store, I must admit that it’s not bad beer. And I only bought the shit after hearing you talk about it so much. Thanks for broadening my horizons.

Grolsch is pretty awesome, but I still prefer Amstel.

I had this ad I was going to scan and email to Coldy, but now I can’t find it.

It had a huge picture of a bottle of Amstel Light over which the words were printed (paraphrasing), “Sorry, we’re from the Netherlands, we didn’t know light beer was supposed to suck.”

So Jujubee, you’re pretty cute. Too bad I’m happily married.

Cheers, Jube!

I assume you’ve bought the export version. It comes in the green glass bottle with the china fliptop. The real deal is the local stuff, only sold in The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the UK, if I’m not mistaken. It has the same bottle, but then it is brown glass instead of green.

Glad you liked it, although I had the Grolsch Export once and found it to be just a little better than Budweiser, at best

Sue: that sounds like a really funny ad. Amstel is a poor excuse for a Dutch beer though. There’s loads of better ones.

Are you a fan of Hoegaarden, Coldfire? All the local pubs around here have started selling – delicious, but really overpriced.

Yeah, I like Hoegaarden. It’s Belgian though, but of course you knew that

I think I paid about 4 quid for a bottle of Hoegaarden at Belgo a few weeks ago: outrageous indeed. Here, you can get it on draught for about GBP 1.50 or so.

Yes. I knew that.

I think I’ll just go stand in the corner with the pointy ‘dunce’ hat.

You can add the Emerald Isle to that list . We get both . The stuff is gorgeous , I love the pop when you open them and the fliptop make a good keyring .

coldfire: Aaaahhh, so they keep all the best stuff at home and export the rest, eh? Still, it was good beer.
sue: Thanks for the compliment, doll. Probably better that you’re married, though, I gotta girlfriend and she gets jealous somethin’ fierce! Especially on karaoke nights.

If’n you look, you can also find Grolsch Dark, which I actually like better than the regular stuff. If you look even harder, you can find Grolsch Blond, which I’m unhappy to report tastes like urine.

[hijack]

Coldie, which Belgo did you go too? I live about five minutes from Belgo Noord.

[/hijack]

Belgo Centraal, Matt. Very weird, and awfully expensive. But hey, my GF has only lived there for three months, so we’re still in the dumb tourist stage

Zut: the dark one is Grolsch Amber, and it IS delicious. The blond one is Grolsch Lentebok (Spring Bock - not the South African one), and it is pretty awful indeed.

Grolsch is indeed fine stuff, and yes, the stuff sold here ain’t a patch on what’s sold in Europe.

But the name, Coldfire, the name! Walk up to the bartender and say, “Grolsch” and it sounds like you’re yerking up a hairball.

Just an observation.

Veb

Grolsch is a good brew, but I tend to go across the water for my #1 - Elephant man, here.

tasty Grolsch

My family is dutch and that is all they drank when I was growing up so I associate beer with those cool bottles!

Tasty stuff but I still prefer a tasty beer from Vancouver Island Brewery

MDE

Jube, stop encouranging that Coldfire geek! Don’t you think he causes enough trouble on his own???

Demo, remind me to NOT buy you a beer when we meet someday, OK??

Vebbie:
It is a beautiful name! Hey, just because you Anglos can’t pronounce the “G” like us Dutchies do, doesn’t mean it can’t be done at all. FWIW, the closest I can think of is the pronunciation of the “J” in the Spanish language, e.g. in the word “junta” (although it is pronounced “softer” in the south of the Netherlands, but let’s not go there). But I do realise that that Spanish “j” is probably hard to pronounce for you when it is immediately followed by an “r”! Damn us all to hell, bloody Germanics that we are

Don’t wanna know how you know what urine tastes like…

Ummmmm… I should have said, “it tastes exactly like what other, unnamed people have reported urine tastes like.” Yeah, that’s it.

And, just to clarify, Coldfire, in the US Grolsch is sold, not as “Amber” and “Lentebok”, but as “Grolsch Dark” and “Grolsch Blond.”
