Watched a movie the other night, I’ll dig up the title if you need it, but the gist of my question is as follows; A bull will mate with a cow only once? Any first hand info from ranglers?
I can’t imagine that this is true. A bull, heck even a cow or a steer, will just randomly mount things. It’s possible that deep in the dull bull brain, there’s an instinct to spread the splooge that inhibits him from mounting the same cow on the same day, but that’s just a guess.
Old folks tell stories* about the family bull, who was responsible for all the calves. This means that my elderly relatives were dotty or that one bull was fathering a new set of calves with the same old set of cows year after years.
(Said stories usually involved being chased up a tree or getting in trouble for tormenting the animal or some horrible mishap suffered during an attempt at home veterinary care.)
Given a choice between two cows, a bull will tend to prefer the new “girlfriend”. (Ditto with horses.) If there is no choice, most bulls will take what they can get.
