Okay, calling it a night here. Thanks for helping me through a rough time with the holidays, fellow Dopers!
I’m gonna play a level of Warcraft and then hit the sack.
Thanks!

I had to check your location - it’s been frigging cold here, too. We went for a walk this afternoon and froze our tushies.
I like “The Polar Express” too, and I don’t like Christmas movies. It’s kind of dreamy and surreal - I like that.
We’re doing pretty good here - had a nice Christmas dinner at my husband’s sister’s house, are home here now with full bellies, and watching a bit of tv before hitting the hay.
Yeah, I heard about all the snow and cold weather Alberta’s been getting.
I was in Alberta once, in 2004. Wow, that was 8 and a half years ago.
Here’s my favourite picture I took in Alberta (in the summer) http://s80.beta.photobucket.com/user/muzition/media/WIYSO%20Western%20Canada%20trip%202004/w_074_Jun28_2004_sun_mountains.jpg.html?sort=3&o=71
Quasi, is it German tradition to take down the tree on Christmas Day? If so, when you put it up? I thought the German tradition was to put it up on Christmas Eve.
Weather here is 32 F and windy. There is a bit of snow on the ground but otherwise dark and dreary. I’m at work with a food hangover.
It creeps me out too. Nice to know I’m not the only one!
Sitting here watching the snow pile up. It’s snowing sideways. Glad I don’t have anywhere to go, hope boyfriend doesn’t get stuck at work. The cats are napping and I think I shall join them soon.
Put it up on Christmas Eve (24th), take it down on the 25th. Christmas Eve is the German Christmas.![]()

What part of Germany? My grandma is German and we always take it down the day after Three Kings Day(Epiphany), she’s from near Heidelberg.
Bavaria, but I didn’t mean to imply that there was any kind of a rule to our taking the tree down the next day. We just always did and continued to do so when we moved to the US.
You’re right, though: That is when most Germans do take down their trees.

Count me as one of the ones who finds The Polar Express creepy - for me it falls into the Uncanny Valley, and it just creeps me out.
I never saw it myself. I prefer the obvious classics from my childhood.
Although, thanks to this thread, I watched * Die Hard* last night!

We didn’t just have Christmas, we had the even bigger celebration of my little girl’s eighth birthday on the 26th. It was a blast too! We had our year’s first bit of snow and she poked that lip out until I consented to a snowball fight.
Everything has been pretty smooth for me for the past month. I managed to make it another year and turned 43 on the 12th. Both my older daughter and I have found a med that helps our nuttiness but doesn’t turn us into zombies so we’ve been having a great time cracking jokes and playing around lately. My little girl graduated from all of her therapies for both her language delay and the trauma therapy from getting hurt earlier this year so my days are so much more peaceful. I’m getting to where I don’t like leaving the house at all!
All in all I’m having a wonderful Christmas, thanks to several very kind people and my loving family.
Good for you! My birthday is the 29th so I can dig it.
