So, let me get this straight: Making a video with blowing people up is good sence and will make people more favourable to the cause?
There are people that still believe that evolution is not a fact and God burried the skeletons of dinosours or that ghosts exist… and let’s not forget Obama is the Anti-Christ… we simply call thes people nutjobs.
After all this, 10:10 makes this stupid retarded video, which just pisses people off and put’s them into the same corner as these nutjobs.
Besides, since the advert was about carbon footprint, it would have been much more appropriate if the giant Monty Python foot simply descended out of the air to squish, rather than blow up the kiddies.
I’m a well-educated, thoroughly green-minded professional biologist.
That ad was a stupid, counterproductive, unfunny pile of shit. 10:10 should disband right now and reform under a different name. Laudable goal, moronic way to advertise it.
There you go again demonstrating your lack of attention for others to see.
Please see my comments regarding the video on my first post in the thread.
No, what you have there is lack of perspective, if they had not pulled their campaign using that ad then I would agree that they are as nutty as the ones you mentioned before, at least they have a sense of shame, unlike all the others you mention.
In the meantime, be happy that you managed to find a single nut to support **one **of your irrelevant say so’s.
So, how does the carbon footprint work?
I do live in Ireland and I am guessing wildly here, but whatever we are doing here is not even 0.5% of the toatal worldwide carbon footprint.
I’m also guessing, that China and the USA alone contribute about 40% of the worldwide carbon footprint and with other nations like Germany, UK, India, Russia and Japan make up about 70% of the total world wide carbon emission.
Why is this? It certainly is not, because I drove to the supermarket to get my lunch instead of walking - it is big production companies, producing useless items. It is farms producing food for a saturated market, for which we pay subventions, so we have to produce more useless crap to pay to destroy all these butter mountains, milk seas.
If I and a few more million leave a light on for a bit to long or go on hoilday, does not have much an effect on the earth.
What the fuck are you on about? Talking about global warming and clean coal, and then linking to the Kingston ash pond collapse? You just grabbed the first link in Google and didn’t even read it; you’re not even trying.
Of cos, it is all the same when I don’t bother turning my three 12 Watt bulbs in the kitchen, Hall and Bathroom off untill I go to bed vs the tax office in Cork leaves approximatly 400-500 lights at 25 Watt each on all night, even when there is only not one human being in the house… yes, all the same.
Ah yes, I do use only energy saving light bulbs and my car does approximatly 60mpg and I only heat the areas of the house, that I actually need… but I don’t think, that my actions have any impact on the whole world as such, when the big companies, governement buildings or the car dealer down the road has 7x 500Watt spotlight highlighting the new cars all night long … Those things waste in days or a week more than I would use in months/years.
I concur that there is an enormous amount of waste and slop. I’ll wager in fact you have no concept of true wasted electricity unless you’ve spent some time in an American suburb. Well, with one exception - IIRC from studies I did in Europe in the early 2000’s, most European homes are incredibly poorly insulated relative to American homes.
One of the very many things I do is energy audits. This is one reason I’m a conservative in favour of a carbon tax - give every household a baseline tax-free amount of kWh (or Therms, whatever) and tax everything above that.
Nonetheless, the little things which people do add up, and very importantly there is the psychological/community shame factor at play.
Sure sure… I know that the sun shines out of your arse and I’m just making shit up: Look HERE and HERE and HERE and HERE
Depending on what and whom you want to believe, IT generates something like 2% or even 4-6% of the CO2 we produce… yes, twice as much as all the volcanos, which produce about 1%, which is still 6.5 times more than Ireland, so there you have your stale nut back simpelton… just in case you want to know how I came up with these numbers, have a look here
How much of this CO2 is due to google, I do not know, but google is certainly IT related… so, let’s stop google? Shut it down? And all the rest of IT?
The dope is IT as well, just in case you haven’t figured that out by yourself, you seem to ignore some facts there as well kid.
Now what part of “the data from Google was ignored by the report” don’t you understand?
Lets remember that your retardo comment was a stupid bit to find a way to shame me from looking for a citation that showed you were an ignoramus about volcanoes.
I have no trouble on pointing out to the IT industry to shape up, but as your reading comprehension fails to detect it, I was only defending Google… And making you look like an idiot… But you are demonstrating that with very little effort. (Everyone can see that you have not defended at all your original retardo comment of the volcanoes)
I can agree there with you, if the small sop has to worry about his energy consumtion, then he looks at what the big boys do.
However, the easiest way to get people to do things is - make them pay for things… eg. energy rating. I’ve got no idea, which Europeen countries you visited, some places have amazing insulation, others are quite crap… like the UK or especially Ireland.
We currently live in a small countryside cottage, which is nice, lovely and has caracter…until winter comes, then it becomes very cold and very quickly. So heating it becomes a nightmare and it is costing us a fortune as such.
We are curently building a new house and the estimated heating cost for a whole year is less, then what we pay for a month at the moment.
And why would I defend a retarded comment about the volcanoes I made?
Clearly, if you would have half a brain, I can not do so, simply because it is a retarded statment… to a retarded Video, to a nutjob organisation producing it in the first place.
I was trying to be sarcastic, but my attempt completly passed by you.
Why? Hell I got no idea, maybe it is due to the fact, that you do not life here and had to listen to people complaining about the volcanic asses in Iceland at the beginning of the summer - at which point I believed that to be somewhat maybe correct - until I had a quick look into google.
Well I have to point out here the why to the “hell I had no idea” is that for some reason many contrarians in the SDMB do start with very retarded comments, then after I show how wrong they are, if they are reasonable, they usually explain that they are indeed supporting the science.
Then I **always **have to point out that the dumb efforts at demonstrating how I’m wrong (in other related or unrelated points in the effort to humiliate me as a poster and the information that was given) would had fooled anyone into thinking that they were just repeaters from the deniers.
The annoying thing is that the ones that behave like you do come back in other threads ignoring how they said before that they actually accept AGW.
If that is not the case here I apologize, but that does not leave out the reality that the IT report you mentioned later is controversial as it is ignoring other factors, BTW I did read the last Australian IT report you linked to, their conclusion was that while IT has a sizable footprint the say so that “a google search wasted as much energy as heating a kettle” was without substance and it is ignoring the savings Information Technology can and do bring to the issue.
**"ICT may be a small contributor to the carbon emissions problem, but it is a major contributor to the solution.
**- one of the final lines in the report
Oh, I do understand there is something like AGW.
I also believe, that what I am personaly doing has very little effect as such on the whole world.
The big problem is the industry and agricultural madness - producing goods and food for the sake of producing it.
Well, that “one google seach = a kettle boiling” seems a bit crazy - kind of government (town council) calculating costs for things like renovating the public toilet (€355.000) in our town here… and yes, they are nuts.
I’m guessing here, but google uses a shitload of energy and of cos this has some effect on the envirment, since their datacentres are located next to rivers or lakes for cooling. How green that is, well I’ve got no idea, neither do I have a proper cite for that - but as I said, it’s a guess.
Almost anything that we as “modern” humans do, produces CO2 - even making a stupid Video about reducing CO2.
