Hey, Melissa Harris-Parry - you're wrong, you're stupid, you're ugly (on the inside).

It isn’t, in and of itself. But Superdude seemed to be saying that MHP didn’t say anything at all.

THOSE people deserve to answer for their actions.

ALL WHITE PEOPLE do not deserve to answer for them though.

If you can’t see the difference, you’re as racist as the racists you complain about.

I’m white.

I didn’t vote for a Republican who wants to remove the VRA.

What do I deserve?

Two wrongs make a right? Didn’t your mom explain this stuff to you?

Meeting love with hate, though, always backfires.

That’s what you are busy justifying.

Yep. That’s life. You can’t attack people for things you don’t know they did.

What if is brother had nothing to do with it?

THAT is what you’re justifying when you justify racism.

LOL. No, when you attack an innocent person, they NEVER react that way. They will react just as I have - with outrage that you would attack an innocent person for what someone else did. Always. You will NEVER improve racism by acting like a racist yourself.

The best way to defend yourself and do justice is to confront your attacker. Attacking your attacker’s innocent brother will only lead you to get attacked more - and this time you’ll deserve it, since you attacked an innocent man.

And on it will go.

Stopping racism requires sacrifice. That sacrifice includes swallowing your pride and doing justice even if it means you don’t get to assuage your anger by taking cheap shots to get revenge on innocent people. It’s how peaceful protestors who endured taunts and jeers and fire hoses and spit in their faces won the civil rights movement, by keeping the moral high ground and controlling their anger. You’re failing miserably at that.

It’s okay, it’s like talking to a brick wall. How stupid do you have to be to think context doesn’t matter? There is no reasoning with that kind of stupid.

I find your reasoning to be absolutely horrible too. But I don’t call you names for it, like you’ve done several times here. I have spent alot of time trying to explain my reasoning, while you’ve done little more than assert that you’re right and anyone who disagrees is dumb. It’s lazy and disrespectful. Please don’t post if that’s all you can do.

You were doing so well until you posted that absolute bullshit about whites deserving punishment for the past. Punishment for past actions of others is not the way to change things. Punishment for current illegal acts is.

Now that I’ve addressed that, would you care to state exactly what the current institutionalized racism is? I mean, slavery’s outlawed, it’s illegal to base employment decisions on applicants’ race, so what institutionalized racism is left?

I get your reasoning. You think everything exist in a vacuum. Context means nothing to you despite the majority of people in this thread telling you why that is wrong. Your ignorance is willful which is why I feel perfectly justified in calling you stupid.

You really are frustrating to talk to about this though. In addition to not taking anything in context, you insist there’s no minor racism, call minor things racist, and then call all racism hate. No, it’s not hateful to think it’s funny to see a black baby right smack in the middle of a photo with a million of the whitest people in the world. Bad idea to say on her show, obviously, but not hateful.

And it’s about the ROMNEYS, not any picture of a white family with an adopted black kid, I’m sure. I seriously doubt she would think it was funny to see a picture of my parents with their kids and grandkids and my daughter is the only black person. First of all there aren’t a fucking billion of us, and second we’re just regular people, unlike the Romneys, which as I said earlier are completely out-of-touch, creepy cult members and the whitest people imaginable, who are also part of a racist political party, so with THEM, any black person is kind of going to look out of place.

If she thought ha ha, how hilarious, about any multiracial family then yeah, that would be racist.

Really? Blacks are no longer disadvantaged in the US due to the color of their skin? I bet they’ll be so glad to hear that.

The justice system. Harsher sentencing, driving while black, etc.

I’d argue that black people still face discrimination in hiring despite the illegality, but I’m not well versed on what institutionalized racism means to know whether predictable de-facto racism counts if it is illegal.

Realistically speaking, many times when one group gets something its because another group loses it. We can hem and haw however we want, but sometimes we can’t have everyone winning. Case in point, while many white people are objectively not responsible at all for any of the stuff that went on before they are born, they still reap the benefits of what went on in the past. Power structures, wealth, even the words that we use benefit whites at the expense of other groups, mostly minorities, especially black people.

When I realize about that is that sometimes you can have absolutely no fault in some harm that is being cause, yet still benefit from it. And if you’re benefiting from it, then the least you can do is, for example, give to charity, or vote to remove inequality, or in this case, not get bent over shape if you’re called a cracker. Because like it or not, if you’re white, you don’t have a history of people thinking your skin color is ugly, or have to worry about being pulled over for the color of your skin, or have the elderly or women cross the street because they’re frightened of you. You don’t have to live with any of that burden, most biases are in your favor. So I’m saying to recognize that, and suck it up if some people want to call you some names. You may not deserve it personally, maybe you’re working to end inequality, but to you, names are just names. To a black person, a name could call to mind the suffering of them and their ancestors that we have still yet to fully eliminate. If you’re white and you’re so sensitive that you can’t see that you’re indirectly benefiting a lot, then you’re just trying to force blacks to act like you when they don’t have your benefits.

You’ve completely lost it, friend. There’s no reason for an innocent person today to just “suck it up” because of past bad actions by someone who’s dead and gone now.

And your posts have degenerated now into complete bullshit. And are approaching gibberish bullshit at that.

It may not be *hateful *per say. Hard to know intent. But it should be obvious that it could be *reasonably *construed as in bad taste at best or hateful at worst. Especially as this time was personal since Romney is a recognizable public figure that some people have an axe to grind with.

I suspect it’s horseshit, that Kieran doesn’t exist as a word anywhere, especially one fraught with meaning. It’s debatable. The article states plainly, “Kieran is the Gaelic word for ‘black’”, and then notes that this fact is “ripe-for-commentary.”

I was thinking it takes balls to describe a wreck of stunt punditry with respect to this small child, and try to salvage the material at the same time - what could go wrong? But it’s a couple of pages later now, and enough people have found the poor black kid in a rich white family amusing, that I’m pretty sure writers will mine that gold vein for any reason, even if they have to invent one.

Am I understanding correctly that you are saying that the word “Kieran” never existed in any language prior to its use by Ben Romney and his wife to name their son?

Y’know, Google can be very useful. Putting the word “Kieran” into the search bar turned up Kieran Caulkin, and St. Kieran, and, gosh, a Wikipedia article about Ciarán, which shows Kieran as one of its anglicizations and notes that it means “little dark one” or “blacky” and provides a list of oh, 20 or so Kiarans of the past.

It’s possible that she hates the Romneys, which would be perfectly reasonable. But I’m pretty sure she doesn’t hate white people, black people, multiracial families, babies, adoptees, or adoptive families. I don’t think anyone but the Romneys has cause to take offense.

True, but amidst the blowback from centuries of one-sided oppression and violence and a legacy of institutional discrimination (that yes, still exists), having to listen to mere verbal mockery from the aggrieved side should be the least of our problems. The problem is knowing how to tell lame mockery from hurtful insult, and the thresholds are not symmetrical because of context and history. We could aspire for them to be but they just are not.

However…

^ That I could along with, but…

^ this seems gratuituously hostile.

Yes, and it also could have helped you find the Gaelic word for “black”. What’s your point?

Clarify: Are you saying that when you wrote

(my underlining)
…you were NOT saying you thought “Kieran doesn’t exist as a word anywhere”?

Because that’s a different thing than proposing, as you seem to then do immediately after that, that the problem is “Kieran” = “black” is a wrong reading of the meaning. *That *could be an argument.

No one else seems to have caught the one true oddity in this picture. Maybe it means something, maybe it doesn’t… but “one thing is not like the others” in an intriguing way.

All of the boys including MItt are wearing blue shirts, most of them an identical fine check. All of the girls are wearing pink/peach outfits, including Ann and the other baby.

The baby in question, a boy, is wearing peach/pink. Huh.

I would like to take just a moment to say fuck Mitt Romney. Fuck him up the ass sideways with a hedgehog. Not that it matters one way or the other, but a pit thread that mentions Willard is not otherwise complete.
