Well, you waste time getting to the bank, waiting in line at the bank, and hoping you get up on time to get to the bank. I hear some banks are even charging a fee for the privilege of visiting a “live” teller. The only time I visit my bank is to get a roll of quarters.
Why bother? Just use a card, theres no more time wasted that way then with cash. Plus, I don’t have to worry about carrying large amounts of cash.
Checks are stupid.
They are for girls, who think they will lose their purse if they put money in it. Also, they like the check ritual, as a way to feel grown up. Get a clue-drinking does that and makes you mellow.
Cash rules. Carry a lot.
Think carrying money increases the odds of being robbed? How? And if you were, wouldn’t the cash be less concern than loss of ID with checks?
Debit/credit cards will save your butt when you got no cash onya or really need a receipt.
Now that I get free bill paying (bank transfers) for my phone and utilities, I write just one check a month for rent.
When some site does that last transfer for free, and they will, I’ll burn the rest of the checks.
Screw cash. I use my credit card for everything. It’s quick, painless and generates cute little graphs of my spending habits at the end of the year.
Lots of places (grocery stores, drug stores, Blockbuster, gas stations, travel marts, etc.) are catching on now and installing card-swipers on the customer side of the counter. What could be faster than that (aside from those eerie implants IBM is raving about)?
I’ll be happy when we all move to credsticks and leave cash to the “sackie” collectors.
At least with cash I know that every single purchase I make isn’t going on a list to help people advertise more effectively towards me.
And the time it takes to run the card through the slot, punch in a number, and print out and sign the CC receipt is just about as long as it takes to write a check. What a pain in the ass. Yeah it’s nice to have in case of emergency, but I HATE the idiots who pay for a pack of cigarettes with a CC at the convenience store! Just carry a few bucks with you. Geez!
Credit cards are faster if you don’t have to sign (e.g. at self-serve gas stations). Just swipe and go.
Entering a pin on a numberpad would make that secure without holding up lines, and would make CC’s much faster than counting money, waiting for change, etc.
One of the grocery stores in my neighborhood (a Harris Teeter, I think) has installed a cashier-less set of product code scanners and CC readers. There are about a dozen or so of them, all clustered together off to the side of the regular checkout lines. The customer scans in his/her own groceries, bags 'em, and swipes their CC through the reader. No fuss, no muss. If you prefer to pay with plastic, it’s the only way to fly.
Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
The problem is not that people use cheques, debit cards, cash, whatever, but the time they take to do it. You know you are going to be spending money in some form, so get ready. Get your wallet out, dig to the bottom of your bag, open the cheque book before you get to the cashier. Are you surprised when you are asked for payment for your goods? Did you think that you would be the 1 millionth customer and get them free!?!?! Get ready, dammit!!
And Zette, I’m not referring to people like your 72 year old mother-in-law. It’s the bottom-dwellers who stand in line or at the counter bullshitting to their equally low-foreheaded friends about how many women they screwed on the weekend or how pissed they got at the party on Friday night. Shouldn’t you be paying attention to the person serving you?!?!
I was at the bus stop the other day and the bus was about 15 minutes late (They often are, but that’s another rant). This woman was complaining loudly to her friend about how bad the service was etc. When the bus finally arrived she pushed on in front of everyone else and then didn’t have her fare ready. She takes about half an hour to dig the right change out of her bag. WTF? You complain about how late you are going to be and then you are not ready to help speed things up. And you hold everyone else up. Give me a break.
