I can see it from our downtown San Jose skyscraper - the whole big new shopping center/apartment complex right next to the Valley Fair Mall – the whole thing is burning to the ground! The flames were ten stories tall for awhile!
Geez, one of my online friends lives not 5 minutes away from Santana Row. I hope she’s all right.
Latest reports are that no one was injured, Daowajan, although one construction worker has still to report in. That’s amazing, considering the extent of this 8 alarm fire.
For those of you outside the area, Santana Row is (was?) a huge mall/townhome complex which was due to open about one month from today. Quite upscale, from what I hear, too.
Which part of what country is this in? California? The top part of Michigan? Costa Rica?
Just a few days ago I put new hinges in the kitchen at Fire Station 10. That’s the nearest one too. When I heard the report on the radio during my evening commute I pondered the fact that those guys, who I just met a few days ago, will be the ones going to fight that fire.
Small world sometimes.
Sorry, ShibbOleth, I was posting hurriedly yesterday while watching the blaze through the window.
It’s in San Jose, in Silicon Valley, the south part of the bay area of northern California. Here’s a link to today’s story about it. Only part of it went up, but it’s such a massive complex that the burnt part was about six acres. Construction workers’ cars parked nearby were incinerated, and embers falling from the enormous smoke column ignited apartment houses about 1/2 mile away, so many people are homeless today.
