Hey! What's this thing on my new fishing vest?

So I just got a fishing vest for my birthday and attached to it by a safety pin is a 3" square of what I’m thinking is lamb’s wool. For the life of me, I can’t imagine what’s it’s for. Since I don’t fly fish (yet) I’m guessing it has something to do to this, but if I tried to hang some flies there, it sure seems like they would fall right off.

Any ideas???

Guess #1: it’s to use to add lanolin (grease) to your line, to keep it from sinking quite so fast. Or, perhaps, to make it sink faster.

Guess #2: it’s an itty-bitty dustcloth for you to dust off your fishhooks with.

Guess #3: it belongs to somebody on the factory assembly line, who is deeply “into” dollmaking while she stands there counting vests, and it’s a leftover piece that got accidentally attached.

Guess #4: it’s actually a state-of-the-art alien thoughtwave transmitter, and the Grand Zarkon is tracking your every movement from the MotherShip even as we speak. Better rip it off and throw it away, quick!

I’m pretty sure it’s for hanging flies. You put the barb of the fly into the wool and it should stay, at least that’s what I always seen. I’m not a fly fisherman either.

Actually, it IS to hang flies from and they do not just fall off. The hooks hang there very reliably, but since fishing isn’t a full contact sport I do not think it has been fully tested either.

Well, I use mine for flies. Most flies are practically weightless, and are easily damaged. I stick 'em in the wool pad so they don’t lie on their sides. They tear out of the pad easily.

Oddly enough, Run, I was looking at fishing gear with some friends just yesterday. One of them wanted to get a fishing rod and tackle for his nephew. While they actively looked for rods and whatnot, I aimlessly wandered around trying to look interested.

It was a fairly high end store, so they had rows and rows of fishing gear. More crap than I ever thought possible for catching a fish. At one point I came accross a section for holding tackle on your person for easy access. They ranged from foam, to velcro, to something’s unexplainable.

Anyrate, it made sense to me. You can change lures fast and can simply stick it on the wool, or whatever, and have a faster change time then rummaging through the tackle box.

So, my wild ass guess is, your right about it holding lures. Not many, just some of your favorites gently stuck to the wool.

::Damn. Refresh before I post. Add’s it my growing list::

Well, at least my guess was pretty much right on.

Ahh…thank you one and all.

Until I learn how to fly fish, I think I’ll just set it aside.

Off to find Mr. Bass next week…
