Cheers to you :slight_smile:

It’s ok I had a few too.

hell yeah thanks for the moment lol I did mine your turn

#goodvibes

Thanks for the encouragement.

It has occurred to me that there may be no phrase in English in which the presence or absence of a “the” matters as much as in “you are the shit.”

Lol hell yeah nice perspective

I can’t read. :frowning_face:

but can you see the words coming out of my mouth

What a difference a definite article makes!

Would interesting to see the OP’s statement translated into a language that doesn’t feature articles.

Makes me wonder how many such languages have slang terms that are also antonyms.

There’s got to be some other way(s) to supply the context necessary for the listener to decide which meaning to apply, but hell if I know enough to say what they might be.

This totally went over my head, what article ?

@Machine_Elf also not sure what you mean I didn’t link an article ?

For your reading pleasure:

“You are dope.”

“You are a dope.”

A= an important indefinite article

“You are shit.”

“You are the shit.”

The=an important definite article

Thank you much

No problem. I can assure you that you are the shit as well.

Euphonius_Polemic’s link explains what articles are. There are some languages that do not use articles at all. Japanese and Russian are two that come to mind, but I’m sure there are others. The definite article “the” is an indispensable part of conveying the correct meaning of “you’re the shit” (cf. “you’re shit”), so it was interesting to wonder how one might translate that.

Anyway, thanks for the uplifting OP. :slightly_smiling_face:
