Hey you racist "realists"

There are still morons who think saggy clothing looks “thuggy”?

Its not like there aren’t any Breitbart/O’Keefe’s on the left. This sort of thingis like a religion for some people, ends justify the means.

Ahhhh, bicycle theft. How it takes me back…

This far back?

There needs to be an experiment to test the same people’s reaction to each kid’s act of attempted theft. As in, the people who walked by the white bike thief should then be presented with a black bike thief to see if they react the same way. Unlikely as it seems (and I confess it’s very unlikely), it may be the case that those who didn’t interfere with the white bike thief wouldn’t have interfered with the black bike thief either, and that those who did interfere with the black bike thief also would’ve interfered with the white bike thief. While I believe that the linked vid strongly points in favor of racism’s being alive and well, a test in which the same person was presented with a white thief at time 1 and then a black thief at time 2, (after the test subject had had sufficient time to mentally separate the events) would’ve have been an even stronger indicator of racism’s being alive and well, if the same people only interfered with the black thief.

This. Good Lord. It’s unfortunate how many people are easily submitting to that bit of nonsense. He’s dressed like a young black male. Some thugs dress like young black males too, due to some of them being young black males.

Black kids aren’t dressed like thugs. They’re dressed like themselves. Some black kids are also thugs.

Kid in the video was extra snotty, though.

Um, yes. Which is why I always wear a well-tailored suit on my crime sprees.

You guys might all be interested in this similar experiment.

Readers Digest version - if your bus pass fails, will the bus driver let you on anyway? Yes, if you’re white, otherwise very variable results.

“we’re mugging you.”
“But you’re wearing great suits!”
“We’re SUCCESSFUL muggers!”

----From the MAD Magazine parody of "Marathon Man"

Moving the discussion to how someone is dressed or their accent really just moves it to other indicators that we associate with race in America. If you think the clothing is bad because it is associated with a certain color or culture, then judging someone by the clothing is still judging the by their color or culture.

It’s like saying “I don’t have any problem with Sikhs, but guys in turbans are up to no good.”

Wearing a turban isn’t analogous to dressing like a thug.

I can and do make judgments about people based on how they dress and speak and act. I’m less likely to hire an attorney if he’s wearing sweatpants instead of a suit. I’m more likely to think “thief” when I see someone dressed like a thug.

There’s nothing wrong with this.

Confirmation bias, yo.

Define “dressed like a thug,” please. How does a thug dress?

I’ve already pointed out what’s wrong with it.

The fact that you associate ‘black teen dressed like black teen’ with ‘thug’ is what’s wrong with it.

Did you miss the example I already gave? Eminem in “Eight Mile”.

I think there’s something wrong with assuming that all black teens dress like thugs. Plenty of them don’t. It’s been twenty years since the Cosby show, you’d think we would have made some progress. shrug

So… plain white shirt and jeans, with hooded sweatshirt, jacket, and hat when outside? Looks like pretty normal dress to me- I dress pretty similarly when it’s cold out and I’m not doing anything formal.

I am unfamiliar and not going to watch it in order to get the question answered. Please describe the thug style of dress, and say why it’s a thug style of dress.

Most black teens dress like black teens. It’s your problem, not theirs, if you associate “clothing that most black teens wear” with thuggery.

You’re saying you look like Eminem? Got a pic so I can judge for myself?

How about the other two things I mentioned, which you are ignoring? Do you talk like him? Do you act like him?
