Hi-ho, hi-ho, it's back to work we go – a miserable MMP

OK…that’s a bright and shiny wake-up, rosie! Thanks!

Quick drive-by as I’m off to the little brother’s for football (nephew’s game) and birthday celebration (low key, mine).

Just wanted to say thanks for all the birthday wishes. Don’t feel any more decrepit than I did yesterday.

Oh, and to display my sig…

Back sometime tomorrow.

GT

I wonder how you all would like to see a regular post like this? Obnoxious, isn’t it?

Sheesh, woman, if you’ve got that much ambition, get over here and vacuum my house!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

I can’t decide if I want to be a bunch of pencils or a diamond.

Ok, I’m home, showered, had a beerverage and now am off to beddy bye. Or maybe another beerverage, then beddy bye.

Later Y’all!

Birthday… wishes… too… bright… too… early.

Hapy birthday to both of you! I’ll do some fancy coding later.

Time to get Mr. Lissar out of bed, get ready to drop off the bread at the bake show, and then lie around. We went out to the pub and then to see American Ganster last night, with DH and another friend. It was very good. I wouldn’t have seen in if Other Friend hadn’t wanted to, and I’m glad I did.

But I was up late, and I’m sleepy now.

The stove is a Kenmore. I think I’ll call the landlady and ask if I should pick up an element, or if she’d prefer to do it.

Ah yes, to vacuum or not to vacuum. That is the question.

Firstly, Happy Birthday to You and You!

Secondly, I don’t think I ever got around to posting on Firday, did I? Well, let me just tell you a fine little story about my afternoon. I skip out on work a little bit early and head off to TVMan’s house. I don’t remember if I’ve mentioned this before, but anyways, he doesn’t drive. So I go upstairs and he is napping but awake enough to say hello. I ask him if he’s been to the Random Electronics Pieces Parts Place yet that he wanted to go to today and he says no. At this point it’s 3 and they are only open until 5. So… I say ok and then I decide to crawl in bed next to him for a nap. After about 15 minutes TVMother shows up at the house with some food for him. He decides to get up after she leaves. I decide to snuggle down for the afternoon. I hook up my CPAP machine and everything. Just as I have dozed off he enters the room and declares, “I am now awake enough to go to REPPP.” Grrr. Why oh why must I get up out of the comfy bed?

Well, anyways, I demanded that I be treated to dinner after that.

So now it’s Staurday, right? And he’s upstairs sleeping because he worked on stuff in his shop all night last night. And I’m downstairs surfing the net and coughing and snorting because of all of the DAMN DOG HAIR around here. Oh well.

Off to surf some more. Good day, all.

BooFae–I am sorry about your eye. I hope it gets better soon. The golf thing just sounds aggravating.

Kai-I had that happen to me once, but it was only Synthroid. They gave me 12 tablets on the 12th of the month. Luckily, I checked the amount while I was in the store.
PurpleCrayon–I hate when sleep is interrupted, but I hate most when you are just falling asleep and you’re re-awakened…Grrrr.

Happy Birthday, GT!!!

and lest I forget…

Happy Birthday, FLeader!!!

Damn, Rosie, that hurts! Turn it down, willya?

I slept until 9:30 this morning. Probably not a good idea - I should keep to a sleep schedule - but I feel wonderful!

My plans for today involve grocery shopping for stuff to make a big pot of veggie soup, which I will put in individual containers to take to work for lunch. I’ve been eating reheated bacon-egg-cheese biscuits and want something a bit more nutritious. Not to mention a bit more tasty. So I’m thinking soup.

I also need to do laundry.

The job is going well and I’m learning more every day. Such as: people are still stupid and clueless even involving something as important as fire/burglar alarms. Such as the place that put me on hold for 10 minutes regarding a fire alarm (WTF?) or the woman who called telling us to take a name off of her contact list. “I have no idea who that person is or how her name got on our contact list.” Let’s see…scrolls up on records…her name is on your contact list because you put it on there in August. Do these people think we don’t keep records? Do they have the faintest idea what kind of hoops we have to jump to stay certified to do this? So far, most everyone has been decent, and I like the girls I work with.

Yes, girls. There are two male dispatchers on 2nd shift, but I haven’t worked with them. In the two weeks I’ve been there, one of them has been late twice and one of them has called out, requiring two other people to work extra hours. I am not sufficently trained to work alone yet, so I didn’t have to work over.

I do give credit to this business - what they do is serious and they take it seriously. Training is extensive and through. I have passed the first part of my certification, but have at least one other certification test before I can work alone; then will have tests at 6 months and 1 year. The girl training me has been very patient and encouraging.

I will be working Thanksgiving, which is no biggie because Mr. SCL will be working also. I found out last night that one of the other monitors will be bringing Thanksgiving lunch to the monitoring station for the workers.

I probably won’t be posting much during the work week - after I spent 8 or more hours in front of a keyboard I don’t much feel like typing when I get home. I will be reading, though, so don’t think you can get away with gropes or anything (you know who you are…)

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY FLEADER!

I’m tired. I had a very restless sleep last night and kept having nightmares that would wake me up. Sigh…

I need to get in the shower soon and get ready to take my mother to lunch and whatnot. On the way to pick my mother up, I need to stop at Costco to pick up the birthday cake.

I never did read last night. I was just too tired. I stared at the TV and dozed off.

I need to finish my coffee and get going.

Happy Birthday, gardentraveler!'

and

=Happy Birthday, FLeader!=

Morning, all. By one minute, which will probably be gone by the time I actually post this. Oh well, I got in under my deadline.

It’s still chilly and grey here today, but it looks like the rain has moved on and it’s windy, so in a couple of hours when things have dried a bit, Papa Tigs will take the Idiots to a large field next to the school (where Annoying Bitchy Neighbor isn’t around to complain) and let them run for a while. It was so disgusting yesterday, Isaac never did get any play time, although he did get a ride in the car, at least. Stoopid dogs.

Happy Burfday, FLeader!

Glad to see you back, Nava! You need to visit more often, we miss you!

And I know what you mean about the medication, kai – I have one prescription that I always check before I leave the pharmacy just in case there’s a problem because I would truly be miserable without it. I’m glad it worked out for you!

Sounds like the job is going well, SCL. I’m so glad – working with good people and doing a job that people take seriously does help, doesn’t it?

FCM, would you email me the pattern for those potholders? I’m going to make my mom and MIL some to go along with their other Christmas presents. I have trouble finding any stuff my mom actually uses these days, since she’s 87 and doesn’t need more stuff, but things like that that are useful are always welcome. Otherwise, she just gets Harry & David Fruit of the Month deliveries these days, which she adores.

And speaking of, I guess I should go call my mom; I call her every Saturday morning at this time (her time, she’s three time zones earlier than me). And then I need to do something productive. Maybe go back to sleep?

SCL, yay on life being good in general! Glad to hear things are going well.

I think our neighbors were having some kind of orgy last night. We could smell the weed from our living room, and the music was making our floor vibrate. From what we can gather they are a bunch of male college students. And a bunch of jerks as well - Cloud Maiden went down there once to ask them if they had any bandages on hand, and one of them yelled from the kitchen: “Ask her if she needs any tampons too!” :dubious:

Okay, I need to grade papers today. And come up with something for my teaching demonstration on Monday. Ugh.

Happy Birfdays!

Aaah Firday was a hellaciaous long day BUT all I have to do today is errands, laundry and pack instead of having to go to work as well.

Did I mention I am going to Cancun tomorrow for 5 days?

Oh I hadn’t?? Well I am - YAY!

And did I mention it is a company boondoggle?

Evening all. Sorry to be AWOL from my own thread, but I was too busy enjoying my weekend! But first, for the formalities …

Happy Birthday GT!!!

and

Happy Birthday FLeader!!!

I am incapable of keeping up with everyone else’s happies, sads and mads today - suffice to say I sympathise/empathise and send hugs, etc as appropriate!

I think (I hope) I am organised for work again tomorrow (where did my weekend go? :frowning: ) - formula powder pre-measured, medicine syringes primed, bottles washed and filled, diaper bag packed, food for HRH’s morning tea and lunch packed and in the fridge, my shirt ironed and outfit picked, shoes polished … sigh! I asked the other working mother in the office (she has a 2-year old son) how long it takes before you’re not exhausted all the time. All she said was, “Not yet!” From what I’ve heard from other mothers of older kids, I will feel like this for many years to come. OH JOY! When is my next holiday? Well fortunately, December and January will be a string of public holidays, starting from December 16th:

December 16-17 National Day (2 days off)
December 21-24 Eid al Adha (3 days off, up to 25th - yeah, Christmas isn’t a holiday here)
December 25-27 Annual Leave for me
January 1 New Year’s Day (1 day off)
January 10 Muharram (Islamic New Year - 1 day off)
January 9-10 Ashoora (hard to explain, but 2 days off all the same)

All the holidays fall in nicely to give me about 10 days off over Christmas, while my sister is visiting, which is just perfect for HRH’s first Christmas! Then once January rolls around, we will pretty much be back to the salt mines, although I am still hopeful that the New Year will also bring new employment!

Anyway, my time is now up and I have to go take my shower and feed Noor before bedtime. [whine]Do I have to go now??? Can’t I stay and watch TV for just another 10 minutes??? PLEEEEAAAAASE!!![/whine] Ciao folks!

Can I get good thoughts/vibes/prayers, anything please?

I read mom’s blog this morning and was concerned. I called her and talked to her well over an hour, and am even more concerned now. I’m 3 hours away and she refuses to let me come up there. I’m trying to get in touch with family in the area and am having no luck…

Thanks…

You and your mother are in my prayers, McUne.

I’ve been thinking a bit today about teaching in general, and the saying “Those who can’t, teach.” There seems to be a kernel of truth to it, although not in the way people usually interpret it. I think the reason why I find it difficult sometimes to get through to my students is that I have always loved writing and have never had too much difficulty in producing, at the very least, fairly decent essays. This makes it difficult for me to anticipate the difficulties my students have, I think. I’ve been teaching them how to employ rhetorical strategies such as exemplification and description in their essays, when I really should have been teaching them about why you can’t start an essay with sentences such as, “There are very particular reasons for me going to college,” or “All people like to buy clothes,” and expect a decent grade. Or why you can’t end those same essays with sentences like, “This is why I go to college,” or “I like to buy clothes, too.” Things that are second nature to me are Greek to them. Those who can, sometimes can’t teach.

I was also trying to pinpoint why these things have always been obvious to me; I guess it comes down to reading. When I write, I try to produce something similar to texts I myself have read and enjoyed. I think a lot of my students don’t have that to fall back on. I probably need to integrate more reading into my writing classes.

Oh well. I feel bad for my students this semester, but hopefully my students next semester will reap the benefits. (I felt the same way last semester though. Teaching, like learning, seems to be a neverending process.)

Of course, McUne, lots of good thoughts headed you and your mom’s way. I hope everything is okay. {{{McUne}}}

We just had the most scrumptious lunch – Papa Tigs got some heavenly smoked salmon, which we had on crackers with this wonderful sharp Italian cheese and apples on the side. Yum! Sometimes there’s nothing better than a yummy-stuff-on-crackers lunch!

Looks like the office failed to send me the work they said was to arrive this morning. :frowning: Alas, that means I’ll have – gasp – a quiet weekend! I have to admit I’m looking forward to lots of putting my feet up, catching up on my DVD-watching, and maybe getting lots of extra sleep. Not that I need the extra sleep, but it’s always good to get it when I can, considering how my life tends to turn unexpectedly crazy with little to no warning.

{{{McUne}}}

Good thoughts heading your way!

Haze–when I was a senior in HS, I tutored at the HS writing center. I was always an honors English/writing student. It came naturally to me (I am losing the ability to spell and remember certain word usage and grammar, but that is age and laziness for you).

I was appalled at the lack of skill–BASIC skills-shown by these high school kids. They didn’t know noun from verb, couldn’t recognize a conjunction, had no idea how to build an argument and present a topic. Topic sentence? Foreign to them.
It was damned hard. This is an excellent HS, even today (my kids go there). It really made me appreciate AP English (so that I didn’t have to sit through Freshman English in college).

So, maybe it’s back to 5th grade and the 3 point essay for these folks? Good luck.
MCUNE-Hope things get better.
Nap time. and then homework, I swear.

Is it GTI or GTO that’s one of those “don’t you dare drool on it” cars?

Good vibes being sent to McMom

You know, Haze (ok, there’s no reason you ought’a, but it’s a literary thingee or something, and I’m half asleep and not thinking very straight… which doesn’t mean I’m turning lesbian, I think), I always find those whatever-American constructions real weird. In Spanish we may say that someone is “Spanish, his parents are Vietnamese” but we don’t use those constructions outside dubbed American movies and TV shows. Today I was reading that thread about running into nasty people from your past and thinking that you’re perhaps the most bi-cultural person I know, if that makes any sense. We have quite a few of those here (hi, 'Mika!)
