Hi, I’m Matt and I’m new to the forums. I have a question. What’s the purpose of the yearly subscription? I seem to be able to post in the forums just fine but haven’t bought anything yet so I’m just wondering what kind of benefits you get from it?
Also, why is my title guest still?
Paid members get the “member” title. They also don’t get ads and get more storage of PMs.

From the point of the Straight Dope Message Board, the purpose is to make a bit of money, to hopefully cover operating expenses.
What do you get for your membership fee? For one thing, you get to not have the word “Guest” under your name. And as running coach said, you don’t get the ads. Plus you get the warm glow of being a Member and supporting the board.
Right now the board is in a sort of transitioney state (avatars are new!), so it’s possible that the benefits to membership may change at some point in the near future.
