Hi Opal!

OK, I’ve been on these boards for a long time now, and also over at Fathom. What’s with the “Hi Opal!” every time someone makes a list? I’ve seen it three times in as many weeks, and I’m just wondering what the origin is. I even just saw someone who is pretty new to the boards do it over in GQ. What gives? Not that I have a problem with it, but I hate to be out of the loop. I want to know because:

  1. I’m nosey

  2. I feel left out

  3. Hi Opal!

  4. That’s all I can think of for this list

Enlighten me!

Zette

AFAIK, Opal (among other things) doesn’t like lists that are shorter than three points. She used to point that out to people, or at least did at one stage. So, the running gag then became to include a “Hi Opal!” as a third point. I don’t think she minds lists of four and longer, so using it as #3 in a list that is longer than three doesn’t make much sense. Only if the original list is only two.

Yes, I know. It makes no sense at all.
I remember once in chat, I got into a similar discussion with her. As I always do in chat, I announce whichever MP3 is currently playing. I do this with the “/me” command. The result is thus: Coldfire MP3: Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire (to use an example).

She asked me repeatedly to stop doing that because it looked stupid. She insisted I made a proper sentence out of it, such as “Coldfire’s WinAmp Player is currently playing Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’”.

Needless to say, I didn’t. But there you have it: “Hi Opal” explained, and a bit more.
