Hidiously annoying audio/video desynchronization

I’m watching “a few good men” right now, which is a pretty good film even though Cruise is starring.

But the thing that annoys me every time is that during Nicholson’s speech at the end - a monologue that culminates in a long close up of his mouth for god sake - the sound very, very, very obviously doesn’t sync up with the video.

Does anyone have a worse example of this?

Actually, today’s TV showing of the film did not have the annoying desynchronization.

I’m not sure why the previous 2 or 3 viewings did have it.

Depends on how you were viewing the film. Cable and satellite both have occasional audio sync problems. The early days of over-the-air digital TV was even worse. They’ve all gotten better, but you will occasionally see problems. Sometimes it seems like the majority of videos up on YouTube have huge sync problems as well.

Yeah I know that - but I’m quite sure I’ve seen the same distortion in the same scene of the same film at least twice. It may just have been some crappy copy, but it was clear enough to be noticeable. A quick check on youtube only turns up synchronized versions of the scene.

For some reason, a LOT of 80s music videos. Drives me crazy!

The thing that irritates me which I notice all the time in just about any movie or TV show is this:
[ul]
[li]Camera focused on one character speaking, usually head only, camera shows the other character facing him with side of face in the foreground.[/li][li]Camera switches view to other character, same camera angle as before, while first character is now speaking in foreground.[/li][li]Voice of character still speaking doesn’t come close to the jaw and mouth movements. You can easily see the jaw moving out of synch.[/li][/ul]

I know - to speed up time and shore up the scene they just loop the voice over the camera angle in the editing room to save some seconds. But I still always notice and it takes me out of the scene.

The sync could have been on that particular tape. Keeping audio in sync with video is a huge problem in any TV production facility. They travel along different paths, are processed differently but need to sync up when they get to your home. And one poorly transferred TV show or movie can totally screw that up.

90% of the videos I open on YouTube.
