The original star wars movies, from what I’ve seen, are horrible. I don’t understand how they’re such a huge pop culture icon.
To be fair, I’ve only seen about an hour of the first one, and then 10 minutes here and there of the others - because they were so boring that I couldn’t stand to keep watching them. And I’ve got a relatively high tolerance for giving seemingly bad movies a chance to get better.
They’re kid movies that aren’t even good at being kid movies. It’s all so silly and stupid - the dialog is painful, the stories and the universe just seems utterly uninteresting, cutesy robots, ugh, the directing/editing/etc is laughable - from what I recall, scenes have different wipes that you’d only see on a high school filming project of a kid going nuts with his new editing software.
I remember trying to watch the first one all the way through when I was maybe 13-14 and falling asleep during it. When the new trilogy came out with all the hype and such I decided to give it another chance, and tried rewatching the first movie. Similar result, I got maybe an hour into it, shut it off, and thought “maybe I’ll be in the mood to watch this later” and never did. I’ve watched bits and pieces of the other ones when I caught them on TV, and I’m familiar enough with the story because it’s such a big part of popular culture, but I just can’t stand it.
I can’t even see how people find the movies enjoyable, let alone this decades-spanning cultural obsession with it - and I’m a big sci-fi fan.
