Highest Ever Score in an NFL game

I saw the Kansas City Chiefs destroy the Falcons 56-10 last night and wondered what the highest ever score in an NFL game was.

Also, last week’s Monday night football presenters mentioned the possibility of a 35 yard penalty - the officials actually only gave a 15yd penalty. What penalty can carry 35yds and what makes the officials decide to give it as opposed to 15yds?

In a regular season game, the record is 72 points by Washington against the NY Giants on 11/27/1966.

It’s also the single game combined record at 113 as the Giants scored 41 points.

In the playoffs, the Chicago Bears put up 73 points on the Giants in the 1940 Championship game. They won 73-0.

Slight correction. The Bears beat the Redskins, not the Giants in the 1940 game.

The only penalties that can move the ball more than 15 yards in the NFL are “spot of the foul” penalties, such as pass interference and intentional grounding, and illegal procedure (i.e., kicking the ball out of bounds) on a kickoff.

:smack: D’oh! I knew it was Washington in the 1940 title game.

I read that little Scholastic book on the history of the NFL Championship game about 10 times when I was growing up.

The chapter on the 1940 Title game was called “Papa Bear’s Adding Machine” I believe.
