I’m one of those children of the 80s with occassional disposable income who sometimes rectifies wrongs of modern entertainment by buying back pieces of his childhood… but there’s a hitch.
DID Slick Rick have a single of “La Di Da Di” from his album ‘The Show’ circa '1985 that had a LOT of radio airplay with a woman singing the ‘Sukiyaki’ sample, “It’s All Because Of You…?” Or am I imagining things?
I know damn well that Snoop Dogg and Nancy Fletcher weren’t the first, but I can’t seem to find a copy of Slick Rick’s version ANYWHERE that I remember so vividly when I was 13. I keep running into a live concert version done in '85 with Doug E. beat boxing, Rick rapping and they SKIP over the part where they should have the ‘Sukiyaki’ sample. … Or the one from 'The Art Of Storytelling."
What’s up? Wasn’t the version I remember a popular mix? (I kept hearing it in Flint, Michigan radio)
The Show is Slick Rick’s first album. Doug E. Fresh was Rick’s partner on this solo joint… this is after Slick Rick (The former MC Ricky D) broke up with the Get Fresh Crew.
Okay – clarification time: I swear before The Spirit Of Jam Master Jay I used to hear a radio mix of ‘La Di Da Di’ with a woman doing the vocals of Sukiyaki. Hoever this was in the mid-80s and I have not heard this particular version since. I’d LIKE to think I can tell a real woman vocalist from a rapper pretending to be one… I concede I may have been fooled…(Positive K got me on “I Got A Man”)… but NO Mp3 I’ve heard of Slick Rick and Doug E. Fresh’s ‘La Di Da Di’ sounds like the one I grew up listening to in Flint, Michigan.
Does anybdy feel me on this? C’mon y’all!!! Daymn!!
I’ve never heard a version of the song without Slick Rick doing the Sukiyaki part. Sorry.
By the way, does anyone have a copy of, or know where I can get a copy of, a version of “The Show” with the “Michelle” Beatles bit still in it? Every time I hear that song, to this day, I always sing the Beatles part, but it’s always cut out.
I think most people were fooled by Positive K’s song. But that wasn’t his “real” voice. I think he did the vocals for the female part very slowly, and they then increased the RPMs on the recording, and rerecorded it (as well as changed the pitch of his voice digitally).
Snoop Dogg did “Lodi Dodi” on his “Doggystyle” album. I believe it came out in 1993 or '94. This version does have a female singing “Sukiyaki.” I’ve not heard the Slick Rick version, so I can’t compare. However, in his intro to his “Lodi Dodi,” Snoop gives props to Slick Rick:
“Yeah, gotta say what’s up to my n***a Slick Rick
For those who don’t like it, eat a dick
But for those who with me, sing that shit
And it go a little something like this.”
Starbury. What got me was the video chick in the “I Got A Man” video lip-synched the hook perfectly, with lips twists and eye rolls, so I was convinced (at the time) this was the girl who actually sang on the single.
yellowval. When I typed, “I know damn well Snoop Dogg and Nancy Fletcher weren’t the first…” I meant that I knew of that version, too, and that’s not the one I was looking for. Thanks anyway.
