Hippie.exe?

What is HIPPIE.EXE? My computer appears not to have it and I’m having trouble opening files without it.

PS: I have no idea where this should go. Feel free to move it.

An HTML editor?

What operating system are you using? What types of files are you having trouble opening? What error message do you get?

My OS is Windows 98. And, since this is the message

"Windows cannot find HIPPIE.EXE.

This program is needed for opening files of type ‘Text File’,"

I suppose it’s text files. I can’t ever recall having the hippie html editor on my computer to begin with.

Normally windows would use Notepad to open text files; someone or something must have altered the association.

Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel>FolderOptions>File Types

Then scroll down to .txt and highlight it; you should see the ‘opens with’ legend change to tell you what program is associated; there’s a ‘change’ button; click it and select Notepad from the list that appears.

Basically, it scarfs down all your snacks and makes your hard drive run slow, man.

I just checked my system, and I don’t have it. Oh wow oh wow oh wow.

But textfiles open fine for me.

Yup, sounds like a virus of some kind that’s re-asscociated itself with your text files. Follow the ways of Mangetout, for his is the way of wisdom.

Do you have some up to date antivirus software on your machine? If not I’d recommend grabbing some.

I have Windows 98SE, and I don’t have a Folder Options in my control panel. How do I change associations?

Do a Find for winfile.exe (File Manager); it should be in your Windows directory. Open it, and then browse to the folder where hippie.exe is. Then click on File|Associate, then type in .TXT where it says Files With Extension.

Then you can select which program to associate .txt files with; as stated, Notepad is usually the default.

Yep. It’s an HTML editor.

Hippie.exe

The above link leads to a FAQ about Hippie, not the software itself.

It also shows uninstall instructions.

Dave’s not here, man.

It also seems to have been made - if I understood the page correctly - to work with Prodigy’s old software…

You need to get some Grateful Dead songs on your computer. That will attract all the hippie.exes you want.

Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and right-click on any text file. Click Open With, select the program you normally use to open text files, check the box for Always use this program to open these files and hit OK. It should remember the association after that.
