Hiroshima Day: A Worthy Cause

Actually the inspiration for my post was casdave who I agreed with. I just wanted to expand on what many people said. There were a few details I wanted to add. Specifically: the suicide boats - most people don’t know that the Japanese were planning to hit our landing craft (and presumably larger vessels) with suicide boats. Everyone know kamikazes, just wanted to expand on it.

In hindsight, I don’t know if dropping the bomb was the right thing. I tried to make that clear. There WAS evidence that the Japanese might surrender - more and more all the time it seems. But, it was the other stuff everyone knew about - and it made a compelling case for dropping the bomb, IMO.

I was merely venting the same frustration I feel everytime the subject of WWII comes up and I think not enough detail is give on what the Japanese were up too. Unit 731, and the other biological warfare units, were no small thing. This was a war crime on a grand scale that killed thousands of innocent people. You should check out the links - there are dozens more if you simply Google “Unit 731.” I could not have expected you to know that I am on a personal crusade to expose this and other atrocities.

It is strange how one person can post something for a personal reason, yet the post can dovetail with another post. Thus, the other poster thinks it is directed at them. I was not aiming anything at you.

Anyway, I apologize for the rant, and happily acccept yours.

Beagle,

I am sorry to see that your father suffered as badly as he did and I am glad that he still came out alive from that awful conflict that was WWII. I have family as well that suffered in the same war on the same side as your father, it was my grandfather, but still he didn’t suffer as badly as your father and not under the Japanese. Anyway, be that as it may, had you read the thread properly and the linked thread you would have found that I never ever tried to justify anything that anyone did during the war; to the contrary I made a point to clearly denounce the atrocities committed by the Japanese militarists at several injunctions in the debate.

That and that alone is what upset me. It was obvious that you were sniping at me for being an apologist (which again I am not) and that you had not read through the debate properly.

Last, but not least our ancestors suffering will only be all the more useless if we do not examine the facts around what was their suffering, because what point did it all serve if we do not try to learn from it?

And thank you Neurotik, for clearing this out. Me condescending??? Me wrong??? OK, OK I know….

You lot think pretty highly of yourselves don’t you? You blindly accept the offerings of the authoritive source, and now you think you’re clever. I live on a planet of apes. I am not an idiot, nor niave, nor a ‘pup’, I am a bad speller, but my vocabulary is not lacking. I know what it is to suffer pain and abuse, to be really hungery. I happen to think a little differently. I have not been indoctrinated nor mis-led. The brighest are always in the minority, as is the nature of relative things.

The thinkers, the creative, are the fathers of tomorrow. Not cowardly thinkers, not people who sit in their comfort and imagine their uni education and CNN channels give them a realistic view of the world. Are the books on your shelves the measure of all you have learned? How many times have you watched history rewritten through imitation(acting)? People like some of you shunned and ignored the ground breaking philosophers and artists of yesterday, you celebrate today. And someone called me niave? While the chances are I won’t change the world, at least I’m not trying to turn back the clock, by saying it was OK then, you are saying it will be OK again. Those who think that are wrong, maybe I’m a pacifist… Learning is the key, when you think you KNOW something, you only stop learning.

PS~
Oh, and Mr Moto. Eat it buddy. Your an obsticle to a better world if you can’t understand your role and forgive the demostrators for expressing themselves. I hope their chanting makes you feel guilty, because that money your allocating is going to kill someones child (not yours in all probability, but oh, sorry for the “inconvenience”). Plus, just because someone else is doing it has no bearing on whether it is right for us to do it. Try looking to the future, not your stocks, I talking about the actual future, decades or longer. Some people are SO short sighted.

Check out these terms, yeah!
Apologist, one who defends by arugement.
Dutiless Rights, when you have rights but no obligations or duties to others or society.

I was hoping this thread would open up some intelligent and informed anti-war and passifist dissgussion. Unfortunatley for me the right is in the middle and the left is out the window. Dissgusting.
Have nice lives you Herdsmen, Afterworldsmen, Preachers of Death.

Then again, there are those who think they know something, yet never started learning…

Dude, what the hell are you talking about? Ten years from now you’re going to be really embarassed should anyone find a post such as that.

Oh, and about the alleged American stealing of Pearl Harbor- why don’t you go ask an ethnic Tasmanian about how they like the British founders of your nation? What? There aren’t any ethnic Tasmanians left? :wally

[Note, that was a tongue in cheek satire. In no way do I hold entire nations of people today for things that were done a while back, as our buddy Halo does.]

You’re not nearly as brigh as you think you are.

COOL! I feel like one of the Four Riders of the Apocalypse now.

(Can I be Pestilence? Please, can I? Pretty plase, pretty please with sugar on top?)

Oh, I can forgive a little chanting. I’ve done some protesting in my time, though for causes you probably wouldn’t like, Halo. What I can’t forgive is property damage and harrassment of people who just want to do their job. There’s not much difference between this and terrorism, in my book.

I can look to the future like the best of them. I’m willing to bet that I have more of a stake in it than you do, Halo. After all, Mrs. Moto is pregnant with twins right now. I do want to leave them a world reasonably free, peaceful and prosperous.

How disarmament of America can achieve this happy end, though, is beyond me. I may need to get a snot-nosed ethics student and professional teatsucker to explain it to me. What I can’t get past is the fact that America did disarm relatively recently in history. After WWI, to be exact.

Our military weakness emboldened the Japanese militarists, leading them to try to keep us out of the world conflict (which, IMO, started with their invasion of Manchuria) with a decisive action at Pearl Harbor. This set off a chain of events that ended with the atom bomb.

The Japanese people and government (eapecially government) bears responsibility for this chain of events. Please explain to me, enlightened one, why you do not take them to task in your posts for their militarism, a policy that brought great shame and misfortune to this great nation.

Oh, I forgot. You’re not against militarism. You’re against America. It all makes sense now!

You know, Halo, what I said earlier about the wonderful members of the Australian Armed Forces still stands. You, on the other hand, shouldn’t consider yourself worthy to catch their piss.

Only if I can be “People who think they’re so cool”*

Bah ha ha ha- stop please Halo13 you are killing me with your massive display of ignorance and cliched rants which bear no relation on reality. Given your horrific mangling of the language and your various “arugements” I am starting to doubt whether you are in college at all. In fact, I would wager you are another in a series of stupid little kiddies spamming up the Board while school is out. When you do go back to middle school or high school ask the teacher for the word used to describe someone who hates people based on their nationality alone.

I await your foaming mouth meltdown. . .

:wally

Bullshit! If this was your aim you wouldn’t have opened a Pit thread.

Now you’re whining because you’re getting burned by the flames.

I’m looking at the thread, and seeing zero support for your position from the right, and even less from the left. The cheese stands alone, buddy. You’ve lost this argument so badly that other lefty posters are carrying on the debate while disavowing you.

I just must bring this unprecedented piece of genius to attention one more time. I read that sentence several times and the more I read it the less sense it makes. A shining example of the fine art of expressing moron-hood. It’s a sentence that deteriorates so utterly as it goes along that it just disintegrates with a resounding PLOP at the last iteration of “wake up” and you’re afraid that when you read it once more it’s going to say something completely different that makes sense, or rather you vainly hope that it will.

You are one singular piece of work Halo13. Not even in my worst psychedelics induced cobblestone-throwing teenage anarchist delusions of the early 80s in Paris did I approach your level of unquestioning nihilism and idiocy.

Go piss on a cow fence.

Sparc

Hang on though Mr Moto, let’s be faiir here. Halo13 did say:

I guess that would be a hybrid word spawned from discussion and disgust. I’d say that the member in q was half successful by creating the latter through hopeless attempts at the former.

You’re a better person than me, Sparc. I wouldn’t interpret it that way. It seems more likely that it was another of Halo’s several hundred misspellings.

Not that I’m immune, but the sheer number is mind-boggling.

I’ll concede this point, but stand firm on my previous assertions that Halo is a snot-nosed professional teatsucker.

Wait a sec, there’s a pro league now?

BTW, I was deeply impressed by the depth of knowedge and seriousness brought to the discussion of 8/6 and 8/9 of 1945. The SDMB at its best.

Hear hear Gobear !

The well agrued and supported discussion regarding a controversial and complex historic series of events was a thing a beauty to behold. To bad we can’t cut the crap out and nominate this thread for “Threadspotting”.

Man…I thought there were fireworks before but now it looks like I’ve been missing the real show! I was wondering how a Pit thread turned into a GD thread but the SDMB Gods found a way to bring balance back to the Pit in the form of Halo.

I’m sure Halo has no clue of this but he (or she) has inadvertently created an entirely new (and compelling in my view) argument for NOT dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. Had the Allies had to invade Japan there is a good chance that Halo’s grandfather (or other ancestor) would have been killed. While I by no means wish death on that man as he sounds like he was a standup guy it at least would have kept the likes of Halo from polluting this planet.

As elf6c mentioned I too am of the opinion that Halo is not a college student but probably a twelve-year-old troll. Heck…most twelve year old kids I know could not only form a better argument for their position they could rant better as well (not to mention have better spelling and grammar skills). Maybe eight would be closer to the mark. The alternative means that Australia is letting people with no fucking clue, no ability to write with even a modicum of basic language skills and no ability to form a coherent thought into their universities. If that is indeed the case I weep for Australia’s future as I generally like Australians and would like to see them prosper.

One last thing Halo:

Do you know where you’d be without the good old US of A? I’ll tell you where! The smallest fucking province in the Japanese empire that’s where! [sub]Modified quote from that classic scene in A Fish Called Wanda.[/sub]

I have just read through this thread, and I am amazed at the responses to what was quite a genuine gripe IMO.

WHAT is wrong with encouraging people to think about the future of the planet and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction? What is wrong with doing this on a day that commemorates the only time in the history of the world nuclear arms have been used in war?

WHAT is is wrong with being saddened and upset that the supposed future ‘leaders’ of the country (ie university students) find beer drinking and head banging of more importance?

WHERE in the original post was there any mention of of the US in particular?

WHY did the Americans on this board then feel the need to attack the OP not only on his/her stance but also on a personal level? Can it be some sort of cultural guilt for being the only nation on the planet to actually use nuclear weapons? All the rationalising and arguments in the world hold no weight in predicting what might have been the outcome had they not been used. None of us can see the future. As someone pointed out, Japan was on the verge of surrender anyway.

and HOW proud do you all feel for attacking someone over their spelling as well as their passion and anger. I can understand Halo13’s upset at coming back to the board and finding himself personally slaughtered.

I hope none of YOUR kids grow up to have dyslexia, and if they do, they are not subjected to such intolerance.

Do a search on Halo13. Trust me. It’s good times. All of your questions will have answers.

I get a sense that all the searching for [Halo13] that **auliya[\b]needs to do would be to look in a mirrior…But that is just a feeling I have…
Or at least look around the room…
